      Disadvantages

A great hotel in KL, good value and excellent location.

We stayed for two nights at Hotel Sentral in July 2010. I booked in advance via hotels.com and paid £30 per night for a superior double room including breakfast. Based on what was available in central Kuala Lumpar, close to the KL Sentral train/monorail station, this seemed incredibly good value and as it had fairly good reviews we went ahead and booked.

On arrival at KL Sentral station on the KLIA/LCCT Fast Train we expected, from the map and directions, for the hotel to be literally just across the road. It is not actually this simple for two reasons, one is that currently extensive rebuilding is going on around KL Sentral station which means that you are forced to walk the long way round to exit the station rather than walking straight across towards where the hotel would be.

Secondly the maps do not take into account the chaotic traffic and ring road system which delay you getting very far with any speed, we found it was a good 10 minute walk to the hotel although it was fairly straightforward and you can see it on the skyline almost straight away when you get out from under the station concourse so it is fairly clear which direction you need to head in.

This hotel is situated in the Little India district of KL which is full of great Indian restaurants and lots of very colourful sari shops.

On entering the hotel the lobby is fairly small, marble floored, bright and quite contemporary feeling. On the ground floor, behind reception, is the entrance to their spa facilities (reasonably priced but we didn't try them) and a small shop. The rest of the ground floor is taken up with a couple of sofas and the lift entrances.

We checked in quickly and easily and were given a room on the 14th floor. We were also told that breakfast it served on the 5th floor. There are two lifts which seemed pretty quick and efficient and within a few minutes we were up in our room.

Despite booking a double it was actually a twin but this did not overly bother us. The room was smaller than I was expecting, little more than a shoe box with a bathroom attached. It was perfectly adequate for the time we intended to spend in it though, clean, quiet and with everything we could need.

The beds in this room were among the most comfortable I have ever slept in and I have to say I slept incredibly well, despite jet lag (or perhaps because of it) and was not disturbed. There was a small flat screen TV, a mini bar fridge and a sideboard, as well as hanging room for clothes and a few drawers. We were not on the right side of the building to have a view of the Petronas Towers and in fact our room looked back across the rooftops at the train station but this was fine with us.

The bathroom was fairly contemporary and the power shower worked very well and had consistent hot water. The TV had a few English language news channels which was useful. The windows did not open but the room had a digital air con system which was quiet and worked very well.

Breakfast in the 5th floor restaurant was lovely. We really liked the fact that all the windows look out across the city and the height means that you get some very nice panoramic vistas. The choice of food was extensive and buffet style. There was a huge choice of noodle and curry dishes for those wishing to breakfast Malaysian style as well as a wide selection of breads, pastries and cakes, fruit, cereal and western style cooked items such as bacon and eggs. Everything was fresh and very enjoyable.

All in all this was a great value hotel in a very convenient location. Proximity to KL Sentral station means you can get around the city very easily. Monorail, Fast Train, metro and standard trains all go from the station and there is a huge taxi rank and bus stop too.

Staff here were friendly and efficient and arranged an airport transfer for us in the middle of the night for a fair price and with no hassle, without asking they also called the room ten minutes before we were due to leave to check we were up.

A great location, nice (if small) rooms, good showers and a fantastic breakfast at a good price. We would consider staying here again if we were passing through KL without hesitation.
