Advantages: Central, great breakfast, outdoor pool

Disadvantages: bit pricey for Lisbon

The Tivoli Jardim is a 4 star hotel centrally located about halfway up the Avenida da Liberdade, very close to the Avenida metro station, and about 15 minutes walk to the city square at Baixa. The hotel is set back from the main avenue in a quiet side road, adjacent to its sister hotel, the 5 star Tivoli Lisboa.

The twin hotels are part of the SRS global hotel chain; there is also an SRS Tivoli hotel in nearby Sintra. The Tivoli Jardim can be booked on the internet at www.srs-hotels.com. You need to book early, preferably no less than about three weeks beforehand as it is often sold out, especially in spring/summer. It's not particularly cheap for Lisbon. The best weekend rates we could find were 20,000 esc (about £65). Be careful to check whether the rate includes breakfast. It always used to be inclusive but I think they have begun to charge extra for it on certain rates. Clients are a mix of business and tourists, mainly from Portugal, Germany, France and the UK. Reception staff and porters are very helpful and speak good English.

Rooms are comfortably furnished, and have effective air conditioning, a good selection of TV channels, mini-bar and 24 hour room service. Pay movies are inexpensive, about 8 euros for three different channels. Bathrooms are excellent with shower, bath & bidet together with a good selection of toiletries and fresh white towels which along with the bed linen were changed daily during our recent four day stay.

Our room faced the back of the hotel, with a wonderful view over a lush garden with flowering trees and shrubs. I know from previous stays that some of the rooms at the front of the hotel are larger, with a balcony but not such a nice view. We decided on this trip at rather short notice, booking about 10 days before departure, and were lucky to get virtually the last room.

Breakfast is buffet style and consists of cereals, fresh fruit, cheeses, various slice
d meats and a hot trolley of scrambled eggs, sausages and bacon. The selection of fresh breads, croissants and pastries was particularly fine but the highlight was the variety of fresh fruit – sliced fresh oranges, strawberries, mangoes, kiwi fruit, pineapple and many others. At peak times the breakfast room and servery does gets a little crowded and we preferred to eat a bit earlier when we could get our choice of tables and easier access to the buffet.

Guests at the Tivoli Jardim can use the facilities of the Tivoli Lisboa free of charge. One of the best features is the large outdoor swimming pool, a rarity in central Lisbon hotels. The pool is a circular one with a grassy surround, set in a tropical garden. There are plenty of sun loungers and towels are provided. Near the pool on a shady terrace is a small bar/café.

Both hotels have lounges, bars and restaurants – those in the Tivoli Liboa tending to be larger and more luxurious. Although the hotels were full, these facilities didn’t get too busy or lively in the evening. There are too many other places in Lisbon where you can eat well, more cheaply and in more ambient surroundings and most guests ventured out in the evenings. The Tivoli Lisboa lounge was therefore the ideal place for a quiet late night drink and browse through the guide books to plan the next day’s activities.

Finally, in the unlikely event that thoughts of work should cross your mind, there is a well equipped “office” for guests just near the check in desk at the Tivoli Jardim, with PC, e:mail, fax & internet access.
