Advantages: central location, friendly staff, cheap for Milan!

Disadvantages: basic rooms

The hotel Trieste is situated in a quiet little street in the centre of Milan. It is exactly half way between the Duomo and the central station so it is ideally situated to explore Milan.
The rooms are fairly modern and looked as though they had been newly fitted out when I was there (Aug 2000). The furniture was a bit reminiscent of MFI fake coloured pine but there was plenty of storage space and still room to move. The bathroom was big and was the usual continental style with an open shower so the whole place got wet. It soon dried and wasn't a problem unless you wanted to walk about in bare feet or your socks! There was a TV but it didn't have any English speaking channels which got on your nerves when you wanted to relax and find out what was happening in the world. There wasn't even MTV! The room didn't have any air conditioning (I think you had to pay extra for this) but the room did have shutters so we left the windows open and it was cool enough. Thankfully with the road being very quiet it wasn't noisy either.
The hotel itself is actually quite small and gives you the impression that it is family run. I had emailed the hotel a couple of times to confirm the booking and they were friendly! We understood each others emails without any problems and all the staff that we met spoke English. This was rather useful as our luggage had gone missing (ie it stayed in London while we went to Italy!) and the hotel staff were really helpful. The airport had phoned to check that there would be someone on reception when they eventually delivered our luggage (at 2am!). The receptionist locked our luggage in a cupboard until we woke the next again morning to save us having to wait up for it.
The hotel had standard Italian décor - lots of white marble and grandiose lamps and busts. There was a small bar where you could get alcohol or soft drinks and comfy sofas as well to relax in. Breakfast was included in the price and it was a
continental buffet. I was surprised at the range of items on offer. You could have cornflakes, rolls, croissants (including chocolate ones!), yoghurt, tea, coffee and, of course, espresso.
The hotel was basic but it was cheap for the centre of Milan and it was fine for us for the one night we were there. We spent the rest of the holiday camping so it seemed like luxury looking back on it! Milan hotels are expensive and this hotel was a basic two stars so there were not many frills but that wasn't what we were looking for. Hotel Trieste is a good, fairly inexpensive, basic hotel in the centre of the city, an ideal base for sightseeing and shopping.

PS the price below was for 2 people in 1 double room.
