Advantages: Cheap, close to subway, in Monmartre

Disadvantages: Thin walls means little sleep

After some time of Air Mile collecting, I decided to cash in and treat my partner to a trip to Paris. Being a big fan of the Moulin Rouge and cabaret shows in general we decided to book somewhere in Monmartre.

Hotel Utrillo is a 2 star hotel based in a vibrant part of the city, close to attractions and great links for the subway.

The road which the hotel sits on wasn't the easiest to find, but after a few simple French words to a helpful man at the nearest subway station (Blanche) we were merely a 3 minute walk away.

On the walk up the hill to the hotel there's a fair amount to see, The Two Windmills Cafe is a must for starters. Once at the hotel, we made use of the free wifi while waiting for our room (2pm). We then took the windy stairs up to the second floor and entered our room for the next two nights.

The room was small housing a double bed, 14" TV on the wall, (mind your head) two wardrobes and a window with a heater below. The heater was amazing, really warmed the room up. The wardrobes were unnecessary, large and very dated; they felt like they'd been dumped there.

The carpet was clean, as were the sheets....but it was all a bit worn. The fleece on the bed had seen better days...possibly in 1985, the same for all the furniture.

The bathroom was as expected, small with a strange hair dryer, sink, toilet and tiny shower. The shower curtain was held up by a bunch of electrical wire and random screws. As the hotel is 2 stars, I didn't expect much and it's exactly what we got.

After the first day of sight seeing, we hit the sack with a tired head. Sleep rapidly became an issue as the noise made by people moving around in other rooms, corridors and the lift was unbearable. The lift door slammed making a noise so loud it would wake even the deepest sleeper and often frightened the life out of partner. The walls are so thin all the noise sounds like it's in the room. We could hear people making the most of their romantic weekend away...

In the morning, after fun in the tiny shower we ventured down to breakfast (we had to ask about breakfast, information regarding times and where weren't forthcoming). We found ourselves in this little grotto which was quite sweet. Again the fixtures and fittings were a variety of DIY and school apprentice offerings.... This started to add to the quirky style of the hotel and made me appreciate it more than the 5 star hotels I'm used to in England. The breakfast consisted of a croissant, light cheese (similar to Edam), plain yoghurt, coffee and jam. We both really enjoyed the breakfast and when some rude people turned up late and started making comments under their breath about the service, I defended the young non-English speaking lady and told them to show some respect.

Overall the hotel wasn't any less or more than should've been expected, the only downside is the amount of noise which for some people like my parents who sleep light, would ruin their holiday. Apart from this, on a budget it's great.
