Eventually it arrived and the bell boy stood in the middle of the room grinning. He was clearly waiting for a tip as a reward for a service that I did want, and wasn't very efficient after all the fuss. However, I was on holiday and I decided not to get on the wrong side of the hotel staff. I parted with a handful of change and was thanked w...more

Premium Review Hotels in Alvor: Sun,sand and sardines! (806 words)

I have just returned from a week in Alvor, which is a pretty, little, fishing village on the Western Algarve. I really didn't want to come home. We flew in Faro International Airport (there lies another tale), and travelled by coach to Alvor. The journey to our hotel the 'Dom Joao 11' took around an hour. My first impression was one of slight aprehension. The exterior of the building, in the half light, looked quite dated and a bit like those tower type hotels that the lager louts frequent in Benidorm. However, I'm pleased to admit that I was very wrong. I had a little difficulty explaining to the bell boy that I could ...  Read the complete review

One summer holiday a year and I never know where to go. So much choice, so little money and so little time to search. This year I had real problems finding a late holiday with the qualities I wanted. The Club Alvorferrias is situated just on the outskirts of Alvor, which is a very pretty little fishing village in the Algarve region of Portugal. Christmas 1999 saw me searching every page of Teletext holidays, all Internet sites I could find and not to mention phoning round every holiday company I had ever dealt with, in the vain hope of finding a last minute holiday somewhere. We didn’t mind where we went but I never like to pay a fortune and Christmas is not the best time for finding bargains, usually. Freedom travel eventually came up with a gem. We had to travel the same day but they had a holiday with Airtours to the Algarve, which should ...  Read the complete review
