I have just returned from a week in Alvor, which is a pretty, little, fishing village on the Western Algarve. I really didn't want to come home. We flew in Faro International Airport (there lies another tale), and travelled by coach to Alvor. The journey to our hotel the 'Dom Joao 11' took around an hour. My first impression was one of slight aprehension. The exterior of the building, in the half light, looked quite dated and a bit like those tower type hotels that the lager louts frequent in Benidorm. One summer holiday a year and I never know where to go. So much choice, so little money and so little time to search. This year I had real problems finding a late holiday with the qualities I wanted. Near the beach, self-catered, small resort, good food, and the happy people at Going Places told me where to go, the Clube Alvorferias in Alvor, Portugal. The holiday wasn't cheap, just under £400 for a week, self catered, but for my money, well timed flights and a one bedroomed apartment. The Club Alvorferrias is situated just on the outskirts of Alvor, which is a very pretty little fishing village in the Algarve region of Portugal. Christmas 1999 saw me searching every page of Teletext holidays, all Internet sites I could find and not to mention phoning round every holiday company I had ever dealt with, in the vain hope of finding a last minute holiday somewhere.
