If you are arriving in Bangkok on a budget then you would probably be best served going to the Banglamphu area. For most Banglamphu constitutes the streets in and around the Khao San Road. This Khao San is always a good starting point for finding accommodation but the guesthouses on this street can often be noisy. With a little bit of walking you'll often find cheaper and cleaner places to stay just around the corner. At the best of times finding suitable accommodation in Banglamphu can be a frustrating experience. On my visit to Bangkok I stayed at the Shangri-La Hotel, on the banks of the historic Chao Phraya River. I chose this hotel as it is voted one of the top ten hotels in the world consistently, which after a ten hour flight from Heathrow, I thought my girlfriend would appreciate the self indulgence, as anyone who has read my opinion on flying will understand why. Excellent front desk with safe deposit boxes. A small swimming pool is in front of reception. There is a travel agency on ther premises and a car service just outside.
