Advantages: Comfortable rooms, clean bathrooms, great breakfast,

Disadvantages: breakfast not too cheap, building work outside at present

Mercure Hotel, Cologne (Severinshof) - about 15 mins walk from the Cathedral, U bahn stop right outside.

I stayed at this hotel whilst on a short break to Cologne. Mercure is a chain of hotels that can be found around the world, and there are plenty in Germany and the rest of Europe.

The hotel was very comfortable indeed. I had a single room, and that had a small double bed. The TV had plenty of channels, although there seemed to be just one in english- CNN. The bed was comfy, and there was an extra big pillow in the closet! There was a small, stocked bar in my room too, but of course, you had to pay for the items. The room had large windows, which was very nice, and a very clean bathroom with a spacious shower. Unfortunately the flush on my toilet failed to work at one point, but the staff helped me out. The reception and bar staff can speak english and are quite friendly.

The thing that I was most impressed about though, was the breakfast buffet- i have never seen anything quite like it! Not only was there hot food (like sausage and bacon), but about 8 different cereals, 8 different jams, 3 types of honey, fresh fruit, fruit salad, cheeses, hams, many types of bread, pancakes/crepes/waffles and even a small chocolate fountain!! I was also incredibly impressed by the fact that there were about 15 types of juice too!! Breakfast really was fantastic, although it is Euro15 extra a day, on top of the room rate (i have included the link below so you can check out the rates).

A negative thing about the hotel was the building work going on outside. It was rather an eyesore, but the noise was very minimal- it didn't really bother us at all.

The lobby had internet access and a lot of leaflets about various attractions in the area.

I also know people who have stayed in the Mercure Hotel in Potsdam, Germany. They enjoyed their experience here, even though they did not have breakfast at the hotel. The building exterior is not too pleasing to the eye, but inside it is very nice indeed.
