Advantages: Great food, Facilities

Disadvantages: Not having a sea view

We stayed at the King Minos Palace Hotel in May 2008. We booked this through Portland Direct via the internet. We stayed at this property for 2 weeks on a half board basis. I went with my partner. We are a young couple and decided we would like to try Crete as we had never been to Crete before.

The food at the hotel was very very nice. The main restaurant had a lovely terrace with a panoramnic sea view. We sat on this most evenings eating our evening meal. The breakfast at the hotel was your typical british breakfast. They had cereals, bacon, egg, sausage and toast etc. For the evening meal on most nights they were themed nights for example we had a greek night and a chinese night. The food was buffet style and you could also watch some show cooking which was great to see. There was plenty of deserts on offer also. I was impressed with the choice. What was really good is they had a diabetic corner. They tried to cater for everyone. They do expect you formal clothes for your evening meal. No shorts or skimpy tops etc.

We stayed in a twin room with a sea view. The view from the room was beutiful. It was well worth paying the extra local charge of 28 euros on arrival to do this. It works out more expensive if you pre-book the sea view with portland direct. So if you dont mind taking the risk ask to upgrade when you arrive at the hotel. We had all the standard facilities in the hotel room. We had a toilet bath and shower. There was also a hair dryer and satellite tv. We also had a refrigerator. There was a safety deposit box in the room but you had to pay locally for this. It only cost a couple of Euros a day to do this. The room was very clean and tidy. Couldn't fault it really.

The hotel staff were very helpful. You could change your money at reception. They also helped us arrange some car hire, so we could explore the island. They would also arrange wake up calls for you also if you needed one. They were very knowledgeable and gave us lots of information on the island and told us the best spots to visit. Nothing was ever too much for them they would always smile and say hello and even try and have a conversation with you even though they can't speak fluant English.

We were worried that we wouldn't have enough to do for 2 weeks. We were wrong there was plenty to see and do. The hotel arranged watersports for us and go karting. These activities were outside the hotel. The hotel offered mini-golf which we had great fun playing. We even had a go at table tennis even though im not the best at table tennis we still had fun.

The hotel is only about 300m from the beach which is handy. The local bus stop was 200m away from the hotel. We caught the bus a couple of time this was fairly cheap. You can catch the bus into Malia which is only 6km away.

May is the start of the season so some of the shops bars and restaurants were only just opening up. By the time we had left though most of the places were up and running.

This hotel was definately worth the money and we will be going back next year for a return visit!

I don't understand why, in Greece with all its lovely food, they do a Greek themed night as if it's something unusual.
