When staying in hotels in Japan you can choose from the traditional style rooms or a western style. It is worth opting for the traditional style for at least one night, sleeping on a tatami mat on the floor might not sound appealing but it is truly very comfortable! It is an experience in itself to enter the hotel room and see no beds, only a low table and tea maker, but return after dinner and your room will have been transformed with futons laid out on the tatami mats and traditional lighting giving a subtle glow. The bathrooms in Japanese hotels are very different too, the toilet seats are often heated and you are supposed to take your shower ... Read the complete review

What can you expect from hotels in Japan? Anything and everything, that's what! There is one myth that I would like to dispel from the start: Japan does not have to be that expensive. Not if you do some research, plan carefully, and are willing to try something different. BUSINESS HOTELS If you are visiting Tokyo try the Hotel Grand City. http://www.grand-city.gr.jp/E/index.asp This is a 'western style' business hotel (i.e. you sleep on beds rather than futons on the floor). I stayed at the Hotel Ocean, Miyazaki last December on a business conference. Like so many of these conference complexes it is an artificial paradise in the middle of nowhere. This is a real luxury hotel, 45 storeys, with each room having a panoramic window overlooking the ocean. Rooms are very large & comfortable, beautifully furnished and spotlessly clean. One of the best I have stayed in. Facilities in the complex are truly impressive: Tom Watson golf course, Huge "Ocean Dome" pool with retractable roof, certified as the world's largest water-park.
