If you're staying in The Long Beach Hilton you're almost certainly there on business, probably at nearby Long Beach Convention Center. The pleasant part of Ocean Boulevard is a mile long dual carriageway edged with tall palms, office blocks and expensive hotels. Paralleling it in the distance, over acres of tarmac and convention parking lots you can see the shoreline with Queen Mary moored on the other side. Behind is a run down area of poor housing and liquor stores. The Hilton, at the end of Interstate Highway 710, is four blocks from the Convention Center, which faces the restaurant area along Pine Avenue. Rooms are good sized, ... Read the complete review

Virgin mixed up my flights so they put me in here overnight. The place is vast (like everything in America!) with 1,236 rooms. There is a beautiful fitness center which is open 24 hours a day, plus an outdoor swimming pool and three jacuzzis. This is very much a business hotel - with cabin crew and business men everywhere. I was not able to try out the restaurants, but room service arrived quickly and was reasonably priced (for a posh hotel). On a personal note, the bell boy dropped my bag on the way to my room. Something smashed, and the hotel could not have been more apologetic. They gave me compensation in the way of four times the value ... Read the complete review

My parents arrived in LA and found that the accomodation they had arranged was no longer available to them and so had to find something else. The information desk in the airport pointed them in the direction of the Travellers Aid desk. This is a registered charity in America who are given unoccupied rooms in hotels free or for a nominal fee. After searching around the database they came up with a double room in the Hilton for a fantastic $45 + Tax - (that was for the room and not per person). They were also offered the Travelodge for $30 + Tax. Needless to say they opted for the Hilton and had 2 wonderful nights in luxury before they continued with ... Read the complete review

If you like blood-stained sheets, unsafe doors, nasty décor and being able to reach out and touch the jumbo jets as they take off from one of the world’s busiest airports …then this is the place for you! It’s a dodgy backpackers hostel in a scary area of town. Handy for watching or participating in drive by shootings. On the good side, the staff are friendly, the hot dogs are cheap and if you’re backpacking you’ll probably make new friends ($12 a night for a dorm bed), but I wouldn’t recommend it. Try a hotel closer to town (like the Magic Hotel in Hollywood)– it’s no more expensive and you may even get some sleep!. ... Read the complete review

In 1999 I stayed in the Marina Del Rey hotel, Santa Monica. LA is such a spread out place it was difficult to choose somewhere to stay, so we decided on near the beach at the Marina Del Rey. Our holiday was booked through Virgin and the hotel was clean and well equipped. The staff was friendly and the hotel was in a nice location, if not a little remote. The hotel is sited right in the heart of the largest man made marina in the world, so is a pretty location. The whole problem with LA is the size and not really wanting to drive we were reliant on public transport and taxi’s. This is an important budget factor for the traveller. That said we walked down to ... Read the complete review
