Advantages: Excellent quality of stay, clean, good value deal.
Disadvantages: Bit far out - although the Metro mostly sorts that out.
Starhotel Milan - a palatial oasis of calm and opulence!
I've stuck this under other Hotels because every time I suggest a new hotel - it tends to get put randomly somewhere in the area of Hotels!
Tucked away on a side street, next to a fine little restaurant and a prestige car showroom - the Starhotel is right out on the edge of Milan - yet handily served by the Metro station 100 yards away, that whisks you into the middle of town in about 12 minutes.
From the outside - with its manicured garden and opulent facade - you think you've come to the wrong hotel, and been given directions to a luxury destination for the sort of people who don't need to ask how much things cost because they're just little numbers that their accountant deals with.
This feeling is continued inside - with the luxurious feel to the furnishings, the mutillingual and charming staff, and the hushed atmosphere within. Even the guest telephone at reception is inside a wood-panelled cubicle.
Our room was high up on the umpteenth floor, and very well appointed - even the TV had lots of amusing Euro channels on (our TV isn't so bad after all). I managed to find the ubiquitious yet always hidden Ice Machine, and even peeked around the top floor pool and gym.
We got the short straw with the view of the internal courtyard - but everything else was top notch.
The bathroom was spotless and large - the hairdryer cord was actually longer than the standard 18 inches, so it became feasibly useful.
The bed was massive and super comfy, the minibar was well stocked, and the Air Con was quiet and effective.
The basement breakfast/conference area was cavernous - the waiters were assigned zones - and both the food and service there was excellent.
Despite being self service, the waiting staff were happy to bring you a different coffee if the standard filter was too boring for you....
The food was excellent - at least 4 types of cooked egg...and the range of bread and cheeses was amazing. Not sure about eating Stilton at 8 in the morning though!
Well spaced tables and an informal atmosphere made the breakfast room a very relaxing way to start the day.
We visited Milan in November 2007 - and paid about £50 a night for bed and breakfast here - a very worthy price given our experience!
I'd heartily recommend the Starhotel Milan - just not the rest of the city, which was decidedly dull.
Summary: Luxury retreat at a budget price....

- 26/01/09 They had Focaccia on a breakast buffet in Costa Rica - is that worse than Stilton? |
