Advantages: great price
Disadvantages: shingle beach not good for kids
I booked the Montemar Hotel on a half-board basis through Direct Holidays and the operater turned out to be First Choice Holidays. (Previous experiences with First Choice made me a bit concerned about this, but I was wrong!)
The holiday cost five hundred pounds for two of us and that included our insurance, so I considered it a bargain and was quite willing to take a chance. I looked up the Montemar on the net and found a few unfavourable reviews but I also found out that it had recently been refurbished. There was however, no mention of the major changes this small, family run hotel had under gone.
When we arrived at Rhodes Airport we boarded a coach and after an hour we seemed to be the only people left on it. We went way up into the mountains and all those TV programmes about holiday horrors came into my mind. When we eventually arrived we were taked round the outside of the hotel into what appeared to be a covered walk way. My reservations were becoming a reality. The rooms were hot, stuffy and dark but I was pleasantly surprised to see that we had paid for a twin room (13 year old boy and myself), but been given adjoining rooms for the same price. We went to the outdoor dining area and had a buffet style meal which was okay but nothing special.
I went to bed dreading the next morning but I needn't have worried. We got up to see the most beautiful garden outside our room. It was surrounded by railings and screened by red bouganvillia flowers. We were in a very private spot on the ground floor and even had our own terrace, sunshade and chairs outside.
The room was sparsley furnished but comfortable. The beds were a little bit hard but appeared to be new. The bathroom included a shower but no bath which apparently was designed to save water. The Island of Rhodes is very short of water.
We discovered that we could upgrade to an all inclusive package for just 70 Euros each. (That's about forty nine pounds.) This included all our drinks, ice cream, lunch, snacks, safety deposit box, sunbed hire and the use of five swimming pools, three restaurants and crazy golf, to name just a few facilities.
The complex actually has 300 rooms which are spread our in garden complex on the side of a hill. We were just a few steps down from the nearest restaurant area and we had to go upstairs to the outdoor pool.
The place was spotlessly clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. The pools and the beach area were all very well maintained and there were a selection of shops and bars just a few hundred yards up the road.
The hotel provided entertainment in a Greek style amphitheatre each night but it was still nice to take a walk to the local bars sometimes. The vvillage of Lardos is about 15 minutes walk from here and Pefkos which is a bit more lively is around 20 minutes in the other direction. Taxis are cheap but walking was very easy too.
A few hundred yards across the road there is lothiariki beach which is mostly gravel and shingle and not very kind to the feet, but there are two excellent swimming pools on the beach which are part of the Hotel and complex and an excellent pool bar.
There is another beach about ten minutes walk away at Lardos and three beautiful beaches at Lindos if you fancy a day out. Don't miss Lindos. It beautiful and the colour of the water and the white-washed houses will make a lasting impression on your memory. Wonderful!
The only thing that let this hotel down was the food. It varied from day to day in quality and at times we were not sure what we were eating. However, once we spoke to the restaurant manager, the different dishes were labelled so that we could see what they contained.
The all inclusive package is great if you are a fussy eater because you could get burgers, pizza, hotdogs and even cookies and cakes at all times of the day. Icecream and drinks including the alcoholic variety were also included.
This was an excellent holiday and the hotel staff did everything they could to accomodate us. Suggestions were accepted and acted on which really impressed me.
I would certainly recommend this holiday complex (it's not just a hotel) but I would suggest that you only book half board as it is cheaper to upgrade to all inclusive when you get there.
Incidentally, I usually stay away from cheap all inclusive packages as the hotels tend to get full of drunks but I never saw anyone causing any problem here. We were all very merry but no one caused a problem.
Certainly a great place for couples, or families.
