Advantages: Inexpensive, Friendly

Disadvantages: none

When youre a cash strapped student on a mission to explore the world, the main priorities in a hotel are...

1) Is it safe ???
2) Location. Are transport and amenities at hand ???
3) Is it clean (most hotels in Italy are meticulously clean anyhow)

Ive visited Rome twice. First time was completely unplanned, and I was prepared to party 2 nights in a row. Luckily one of us spoke a bit of italian from school and managed to link a really nice spot for the night. It used to be called "La Luna" and its 3 minutes to Termini station on a main road (Via Marsale number 80 something)

I do not claiming this to be anything special with glass chandeliers and 4 peice set menus, but if you want to make a trip to see the sights and are not bothered too much about no silk feathered pillows it does the job. Youll be paying about £15 a night pp which is perfect. This was in April or May on both occasions without booking.

I went back to the same hotel three years later and it seemed like the previous owners sold out and the new ones have really done it up. Its called "Charlie Browns" now which is unfortunate.

The rooms are plastered with pictures of mickey mouse in the 50s and collages of daffy duck and the other Disney crew. Theres wavy mirrors and the place is extremely clean with nice wavy mirrors and blue lamps. The bed and wardrobes were brand new. The first time I went with two other people, we had a large room for three people £45. The second occasion was with one other person. The two of us had the family room with a single and double bed for £30. On both occastions the rooms were at least 6x6 metres so you wont feel too claustrophobic.

ATMOSPHERE: The reception lady is freindly, and orientates you with a map and what to find where for a good half an hour. On top of that you get free broadband internet in the computer room, which is new. The hotel is quite a small affair, and the people in there w
ere just happy young tourists who stumbled in by accident, I only got to see 2 or 3 of them.

Oh yes, you get a breakfast ticket for next door, which equates to a free croissant and some semi-rancid coffee.

Its quiet and calm and 3 stories above so you can watch the world go by and throw water on people down below if you want. The shower was shared for 2 rooms but when youve lived in dingy halls, you dont give a damn... it was powerful and relaxing. Bathroom was spotless.

I read in a quick guide somewhere that Termini area was crime hotspot for muggings in the 90s, but having walked around there for a few days around April/May i find this claim to be largely unsubstantiated. In fact Rome is spooky compared to London, because you could walk around all night and enjoy the sights without worrying too much. There are police next to all the major sights of course in the background, but the place is incredibly safe and quiet.
