Advantages: Wonderful San Francisco

Disadvantages: Busy, busy, busy.

Having been to the USA several times , mainly Florida, we ignored advice to book our hotel in San Francisco thinking that there would be plenty to chose from – big mistake. We arrived on a Friday along with half the population of America on their weekend breaks & every hotel we fancied was either full or the price had been hiked up . Now you don’t need this after an 11 hour flight & I have to say that we were getting a bit panicky. Eventually we found a small motel just off Van Ness & gladly took the first room offered. Another BIG mistake ! We fell into bed exhausted only to be woken in the early hours by screeching car wheels outside & a lot of shouting. Half asleep we wondered if we were dreaming & then someone was trying to get in our door. Thank God for the numerous locks which we had bothered to close & whoever it was quickly ran away. By now we were wide awake – it was 3 in the morning & we sat there waiting for daylight.
When we reported this to the motel staff next morning they said that we should have rung the front desk & someone would have come to our aid; being so tired we did not think to do that but luckily no harm had come to us & we had learnt a valuable lesson.
1.Book in advance.
2.Don’t take a room with the door onto the street – always look for a motel with internal doors or take a room on a higher floor.
3.Make sure your doors are locked.

We went on to have a wonderful holiday in San Francisco & can’t wait to go back. It’s a magical city in a beautiful setting but you must remember to keep your wits about you. Bournemouth it ain’t !
