I used to work as a travel agent and was luckily enough to get a free trip to Singapore in 2000. Of course the trip was strictly work! Five full days seeing the sights, visiting hotels and tasting the local food so that we would be able to sell Singapore to our clients upon our return! We visited and stayed at a number of mid-range/luxury hotels in Singapore: Hotel Phoenix, Singapore Marriot, Traders, Raffles and the Westin Stamford. We also took a side trip to the Indonesian island of Bintan, which is just a short catamaran trip from Singapore, and visited a couple of hotels there which I will mention. The Allson Hotel on Victoria Street, right in the centre of the city is a business class hotel. It does not have much character to it at all, but is clean efficient, spacious and boasts a roof top swimming pool, japanese and chinese restaurants and health centre. The staff are not particularly friendly but they are mostly helpful and polite. The best thing about this hotel is its position, right next door to it is the Victoria hotel which is a much older, cheaper and fairly delapidated hotel which may be ok if you are on a really tight budget, but if you want a good standard priced hotel then the Allson is really good.
