Advantages: Excellent location
Disadvantages: Expensive; tired fabric; lacking in style & comfortverything else
I stayed in the Sheraton Stockholm in early March 2001. The hotel is very conveniently situated just a few minutes walk from the station. There is an excellent express train link from the station to & from Stockholm Arlanda airport. The hotel is near the old town where you can visit the Royal Palace, which is great. You can get a combined ticket to see the Palace, armoury & coach house and Museum of Antiquities. I don't recommend persevering to find the latter which is basically two long narrow rooms lined with unmemorable Greek statues, mostly with chipped noses & other missing parts. I thought the state coaches, weapons, & royal regalia were worth seeing though, especially the various silk and jewel encrusted crowns. The old town was busy and animated on the Saturday I visited, without being too crowded. Except in one shop, where there was a bizzare variety of remaindered goods being sold at remarkably cheap prices. Model ships, bathroom ornaments, art & craft work; porcelain dolls etc. I'm glad that I didn't have patience to queue, or the room to carry too much stuff back, otherwise I could have done terminal damage to my bank account, especially given the cost of the Sheraton. However, I did buy Elgar the soft toy reindeer, resplendent in a knitted jumper at a gift shop further up. A snip at 99 Kr. The old town is a good place for souvenir shopping and there are lots of cosy bars and cafes, many candlelit. But now for the bad news about the Sheraton. At over 2100 Kr per night, this must be the worst value hotel I have stayed in for some time. An unimpressive entrance, difficult to find around the side of this circa 50/60s concrete tower. Indifferent check in; shabby room on the first floor; no clean tables to sit at in the relatively small breakfast area; and uninspiring bar which was just an extension of the entrance lobby. I always associated Sweden with great style, comfort and service. What a le
t down this hotel was. Basingstoke on a wet Sunday night is more appealing.
