Stockholm's hotels are not the cheapest in the world and they have some of the smallest rooms I've encountered. That is why those in the know book the Sheraton. The rooms are enormous. My room was bigger then the apartment I later moved into.

It's located facing the water and the islands of the old town, a short walk from the main rail station, T-Ban Central (the station where all three underground railway lines intersect) and the airport bus station.

Between the hotel and the water is a wide stretch of road, bus lanes and stops. Rooms from the higher floors at the front have good views over the water and bridges taking traffic and trains across the lake.

The Sheraton was my first time in Sweden and immediately I noticed cultural differences. The little souvenir shop stocks (what in Britain are called) hard core porn magazines and next to the bar is a casino where you can just walk in and gamble. The wall unit in my room had a gaping hole where the mini bar belonged. Whereas in Britain alcohol is freely available yet porn is banned and gambling severely restricted, here it was the other way round.

The Sheraton has 460 rooms and hosts conferences and package tours thus breakfast can be hectic with the maitre 'd making sterling efforts to seat lines of people all of whom are in a hurry. And yet in the evening the same dining room becomes a pleasant and restful place to relax.

The large public area near reception is a favoured by locals as a place to meet, as everyone knows where the Sheraton is. My friend was waiting one evening for his girlfriend when a woman came and sat next to him and after a little social chat asked him how much he charged. I sat in the same spot for the next three evenings hoping also to be mistaken for a gigolo without anyone taking the slightest interest in me

With its central location, good transport connections and above all the huge rooms, the Sheraton is a great place
to use your base in Stockholm.
