Stayed at the Turtle Beach Hotel in Tobago two years ago with my husband and two children. You will either love or hate this hotel - I loved it! We had the most wonderful time there and met some lovely people. The décor is slightly tired and shabby and the typically Caribbean pace of service is not to everyone's taste. The hotel is clean and in the most perfect location directly on the beach, the staff and fantastic local beach vendors really bring the place alive. I arrived in Tobago, looking forward to staying in the VERY expensive Hilton. The problems I incurred were as follows; 1. Check in - room requests completely wrong (non smoking rooms not given) 2. An extra bed was asked for and paid for. This arrived 8 hrs later after 5 phone calls to house-keeping. 3. Not all of the pool side bars are open all day long. 4. The actual POOL is shut after 7pm. 5. Guests are requested not to walk in the grounds after dark. (should we stay in the hotel room all night?) 6. The Asa Wright centre is more than just a hotel, it's a nature reserve, research centre, visitor attraction and tranquil get-away-from-it-all hideaway, high up in the Northern Range mountains of Trinidad. The original house is set on a former coffee/cocoa/citrus plantation overlooking the Arima Valley, and was established as a residence for visiting naturalists in the post-war years, by its owner, Asa Wright. As she became too elderly to manage the place, a trust was established to protect the estate and maintain the house as a hotel for wildlife enthusiasts.
