I always like to carefully choose the hotels where i am going for holiday or weekend trips. I believe that the quality of a holiday depends not only of the place, the company, but also of the hotel you are living in. That's why i like to choose a hotel that has a "special something" to make my holiday from excellent to perfect. And when we talk about "special something" in hotels, the most appropriate example is the Danieli Hotel in Venice. The former house of duke Dandalo in the 14Th century, Danieli hotel is an impressive palazzo, located in the heart of Venice, right near San Marco Square and the Dodge Palace. With beautiful views over ... Read the complete review

Venice. Getting there, Hotel Manin then out and about. We decided to go to Venice for my wife's 40th birthday. She had been there herself some 20 years earlier when she was a nanny to an Italian family who lived in Portafino. Even back then my wife cannot remember the canals having had a bad smell. However perhaps they did she was only there a few hours. They certainly do not smell now, in fact the water is crystal clear and have a bluish tint up the side canals. We flew from Liverpool airport, which was an uneventful and as usual cramped flight. Word of warning, if you travel on a cheap flight as we did then beware, friends of ... Read the complete review

Al Portico is an amazing Venice hotel that I would highly recommend! It is just off of the main "street" through Venice, The Strada Nova, which makes it very central. You can walk to this hotel in 5 mins from the railway station, and be at the Rialto Bridge in 10 mins walk. St Mark's Square is about 15 mins walk. It is 70 metres from the nearest Vaporetto stop, so easy to reach from the airport. It is run by a family who like to think of you as their personal guests, so they are very friendly, with brilliant English. They will help and advise you on your stay or simply let you be. They even gave us a free map which helped greatly, although ... Read the complete review

The Hotel Pausania has three stars and is a pleasant place to stay. It is next to a canal so no surprises there! The feeling of security that you have in Venice after dark means that there is no problem walking to and from the Hotel and it is near the Academia Bridge. It was a 14 Century castle and retains some of the features including the original well in what was the courtyard. The staff were friendly, helpful and supplied quite a good basic but free map. The Hotel has air conditioning, Sky TV (Sport, CNN and BBC World, i.e. three channels in English) and the windows had shutters that were light and sound proof, they even kept out the dawn chorus ... AWFUL!!! Bypass this hotel if you have any common sense. I only hope that this opinion reaches at least one other person and convinces them that this hotel is not in any way shape or form worthy of even one of its three stars. The furnishings were horrible, the corridors had a nasty odour, I wouldnt even go to breakfast because I was too scared of how bad it could be. On arrival I wanted to cry but since it was booked very quickly (my flight was cancelled and I needed to find somewhere to stay and the airport helpdesk booked this for me). The bathroom was tiny, and I dont know if this puts you off but I personally hate a shower curtain in a hotel bathroom, ... Read the complete review
