Advantages: Its so beautiful!

Disadvantages: Almost none

Verona, home of Shakespeare's famous Romeo and Juliet, is one of the more beautiful Italien cities. Home of the Arena Amphitheatre - the third largest Roman one in the world - the aforesaid Juliet's Balcony and some of the best tucked-away restaurants in Italy, it is definately a place to while away a couple of days if you are travelling through Italy.

The trouble with many of the hotels in Verona is that they are over-priced due to the demand during the summer months. The hotels in most people's price range are too far from the centre to really enjoy Verona, and anywhere closer is ludicrously expensive.

That is why the Hotel Torcolo is so good. Cheap at the price (around £65 per night for a double room, without breakfast), situated five minutes' walk away from the Arena and the delightful centre Square, as well as clean and pleasent, it is a virtual God-send.

The middle-aged women who run it are Opera-buffs, and if you contact them by email at hoteltorcolo@virgilio.it they can book you tickets for one of Italy's famous Operas, open-air in the Arena during summer months, and inside in the winter (tickets are around £20 per person, but it is worth it!)

While I was staying at the practical, no-frills Hotel Torcolo, one of the stars of La Boheme, the Opera that I saw, was staying in Torcolo's annexe, and the owner was able to get me her signature.

Verona is a truely beautiful city, with historical buildings (such as the amazing Arena, which I could hardly tear myself away from when it was sunny) sharing streets with modern bars and classy restaurants. Archetypal Italien cuisine can be found in almost any of the moderately-priced pizzerias and alcohol is cheap and flows freely!

If you are passing through this area I strongly recommend a visit because it is a beautiful city, and if you want clean, simple accommodation without being ripped off, the ideally-situated Hotel Torcolo is the plac
