My first memory of a hotel stay involved an Ibis (the one at Euston in London) and it was an enjoyable one, so when the Ibis (pronounced ‘Eye biss’, NOT ‘Ibb iss’) in Bonn turned out to be the cheapest option for a stay in the city, I was happy to accept it. “Ibis” is a funny name in German and if you struggle (thinking phonetically and slightly changing the German language as you do so) you can translate it as “a bite”. **** Booking I made my reservation through Expedia. Last year, I wrote with glowing praise about the new chain of hotels being operated under the Holiday Inn banner as 'Holiday Inn Express'. They were brand new, inexpensive and situated within easy reach of a variety of City centres. They were ideal for the Business traveller and for a family weekend break. So, imagine my surprise when during the Summer I needed to book a couple of nights stay in a hotel near to the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield. The first place I looked for was the Holiday Inn Express in nearby Rotherham. We had stayed their in 2000 and found that it was closer to stay there than in Sheffield itself. Just had a long holiday floating around Europe, been to over 10 cities, 6 countries in total. On the road, especially for holiday - which is meant for relaxation, the last thing I'd want to do is to worry about where to lodge after a day's out. A colleague recommended the Ibis Hotel. This is a chain hotel under the Accor group, which consists Ibis, Novetelle, Hotel Mercury and a few more. Ibis are mostly 2 stars. But for me, it's better than 4 star.
