Advantages: cheap, but not that cheap

Disadvantages: everything

I stayed at the "resort" last fall with a few friends. We stayed for four days.... it was pretty empty, food was average, service was average, the bar was average.... all in all, we weren't overwhelmingly impressed. But we were happy because we were in JAMAICA. It was a first visit for all four of us. The weather was wonderful and we didn't really need much else. We entertained ourselves and had pretty lazy days on the beach and in the water.

We had two rooms on the top floor (third) that had a balcony door with opened up so that we could go back and forth between the rooms. We slept with the sliding glass doors open to the balconies so that we could hear the ocean lapping on the shores.

Anyway, the last night we were there, someone or more than one person came into one of our rooms from the balcony and robbed us in our sleep. They took two cameras, the cash in our wallets and left completely undetected. One of the cameras was an expensive digital and not only were we out the hundreds of dollars in value, we also had very few photos of our trip there. The worst part was, we left feeling completely miserable. The hotel did NOTHING to claim any responsibility for the robbery and our misery, not to mention the absolute horror that someone had been in our rooms while we slept! We had a seven thirty am departure and didn't have enough time to make demands.

I tried for weeks to get them to just replace the one camera and they refused to take any responsibility, claiming we must have lost it somewhere. I know the room doors were not opened as they stuck when you opened them and would have made a lot of noise. And the wallets, which had been on the bed tables were found in the bathroom open and without cash. The balconies have quite a ledge that runs around the outside and anyone could have easily hopped from room to room.

Please do NOT stay at this hotel. It isn't safe or terribly pleasan
t. Spend a bit more and stay someplace nicer and more responsible.

Thanks.

I'm sorry your holiday was ruined. It must have been awful to think of someone rifling through your things.

Welcome to Dooyoo! I hope you have a good time here.

A very sad story but not really surprising to me. I stayed in Jamaica 10 years ago, and crime was rife...even though all the windows where I was staying had bars, and only opened partially, I was told not to leave them open at night as people would fish things out with a fishing rod.

The simple answer is don't ever, ever leave your windows open at night. Most hotels should have air conditioning or fans to deal with this, and anyway keeping the windows shut means you keep the mosquitos OUT! Any decent travel guide like Lonely Planet or Rough Guide would give sensible advice about avoiding crime; I'm sorry you weren't better advised!
