“ Address: Albufeira / Algarve / Portugal „
My husband and I spent a week in Portugal back in April of this year and we stayed in the Janelas Do Mar Apartments hotel in Albufeira.
We read reviews for this hotel before we left and to be quite honest not many people raved about the place.
It was on a steep hill and the apartments were grubby some people were saying that it was the hotel from hell.
We had booked and paid for the holiday so thought that we would make the most of it and try and enjoy our break despite the bad feed backs that we had read.
On arrival at one o'clock in the afternoon we were quickly booked in by a very smart and pleasant lady receptionist who spoke perfect English.
We were expecting to have to store our luggage and go for a walk for a couple of hours after reading that you had to wait until three o'clock in the afternoon before you could check in but this was not the case at all.
A safe was provided in the room and the key cost 15 euros for the week with a 15 euro deposit. I found this to be quite a reasonable charge for peace of mind.
There was a colour television in the room but you had to hire a remote control which we did because it was quite nice to come back in the evening and watch a bit of television before we went to bed. This cost 30 Euros for the week and another deposit of 15 Euros.
I thought the price was again reasonable because we did get BBC and ITV 1, and I could watch my favourite soaps.....sad person that I am.
The apartments are on a hill but not as steep as we were led to believe, three tower blocks all freshly painted white and standing in really well kept grounds, I was certainly impressed it looked very attractive.
There is a swimming pool with ample sun loungers, beach bar and coffee shop. The convenience store was quite pricey but we all expect them to be, I found it handy for buying bottled water and the odd pint of milk.
A gym, sauna, games room and roof top pool were located in the third tower block and a nice bar in the middle block where the main reception was. I think the hotel provided just about everything that you could want so I was really pleased with the choice.
We didn't use the pools at all because it was a bit breezy but they looked lovely and clean.
Our apartment was on the sixth floor in the middle block and when we first went in we were taken aback at the size of it. A main lounge with two comfy sofas, coffee table, side lamps and television, then a dining area and kitchen.
The kitchen was obviously brand new it was immaculate as were all the utensils. I am a bit funny about holiday apartment kitchens I have had some really seedy ones in the past but this was first class. The fridge was a good size for food and storing the essentials like lager and wine.
The bathroom was again spotless with a bath, separate shower, vanity unit with basin and huge mirror and of course the loo. We had twelve crisp white towels believe it or not and they were regularly changed during our stay.
The verandah had a drying rack for clothes, a table and four chairs and I was happy because the sun shone on it throughout the day, I am a bit of a sun queen so I could not have been given a better room.
The bedroom was enormous with two twin beds which of course we immediately pushed together, why do they always do single beds abroad? The built in wardrobe was impressive with about 50 coat hangers!
A nice touch to the bedroom was a thick rug on the tiled floor.
This hotel was a really nice place to stay, and considering we only paid 220 pounds each for a week including the flight I consider it excellent value for money.
There were two lifts in each block and they went up and down like rockets, I don't think I have been a faster lift since I visited the Empire State building in New York.
The only fault I found with this hotel was the location, we had a hire car but if I had had to pay out for taxis or walk to town and back I don't think that I would have enjoyed the week so much.
There was a local bus service and the bus stop was right outside the hotel but we didn't try it out ourselves.
If you are considering a break in Portugal try this hotel it is certainly nothing like some of the reviews descriptions that I have read on the holiday sites and it is ideal for families because of the size of the apartments.
