Advantages: 5-star in every respect
Disadvantages: Maybe a wee bit too near the naughty areas of Sukhumvit for some
I stayed in the JW Marriott for one night last November, in transit from Chiang Mai to the UK via Suvarnabhumi. Having just written that, I've enjoyed a few drinks at the Marriott's wonderful cocktail bar on several occasions, which is a great selling point for this 5-star hotel.
From arriving at the Marriott and being solicited by safari-clad staff at the entrance, the Marriott experience is 5-star all the way. The marble-clad entrance is imposing, yet discreetly not too overstated. The Italianate marble runs throughout the entire length of the ground floor, including the lengthy reception area that is staffed by sartorially-elegant and professional receptionists who greet the tired traveller with a warm smile and considered courtesy. Your check-in will be smooth and quick.
Ushered up to your room with the bellhop in whispering lifts (elevators) is an experience in itself. It almost vocally proclaims casual, discreet luxury, and arrives at your floor with a sigh and the subsequent silent opening of the doors.
The rooms are, to say the least, the final word in Marriott chic; huge, playful bed; deep fluffy pillows; chocolates, red ribbons, thick pile towels, a dinner-plate-sized showerhead, and again the ubiquitous marble in a shower/restroom liberally stocked with almost every conceivable toiletry. And then some.
The TV screen is HD-ready, enormous, and supplied with a plentiful array of channels for the guest not quiet ready to dip their minds and bodies into the sensuous extravaganza that is Bangkok.
Naturally, and specifically now the breakfast/dining area, the Marriott caters to one's needs with care, attention to detail, and in generous helpings. The food is international in ambition, scintillating in quality, and all this supported by staff hovering to meet one's every need.
Go there, if you can afford it; it really is a superb experience. Oh, finally - the toilets near the cocktail bar: these HAVE to be experienced. Best I've EVER had the privilege to use!
Summary: Cool.
