Advantages: Central, Quite luxurious

Disadvantages: Not too cheap

During a weekend break in Munich I stayed at the King’s hotel Center. One of the reasons I decided on this hotel was the fact that it is located very centrally (only about 3 minutes walk from the train station and 5 minutes from the shops). Another reason is that on most weekends, they do a special deal called The King’s Weekend where a double room costs just 145DM (approx. 45 pounds) per night including a rather tasty breakfast. This deal is based on two people sharing and is not valid during special events such as the Oktoberfest (for more information on the Oktoberfest, see my article on what to do in and around Munich).

Although at first glance the street the hotel is located on appears quite rundown, the hotel itself is quite luxurious and the main building is set back from the main road, so that you are not bothered by the traffic. It was built last year and has been decorated in an ornate style. I found it to be clean, tidy and functional. The rooms are sufficiently sized for two people and have four poster beds, cable television with Sky News, CNN, and an English movie channel (at an additional cost), plus en suite showers and WCs. The only drawbacks I felt the rooms had was that the double bed was in the German style, meaning that it had two single mattresses together rather than one large mattress and there was no kettle in the room for making tea or coffee nor was there a mini bar. I also felt that the hotel were slightly stingy in providing two bottles of mineral water in the room at an extra cost.

The breakfast provided by the hotel is a typical German buffet affair with all the bread, meats, cheeses and jam you can eat. They also have more traditionally English dishes, such as scrambled egg, cereal and orange juice if you have a smaller appetite (or if you have been sampling the local beer specialities the night before). I couldn’t fault it.

I remember staying in a hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen where the beds consisted of 2 single beds placed together horizontally. It was excruciatingly painful unless you slept sideways on.

Enjoyed your op.
