Advantages: Very friendly

Disadvantages: A long way from England

We have just returned from 2 weeks touring the West coast of the USA. Having seen some magical sights including the Grand Canyon, the last 4 days of our holiday were an unexpected bonus. Let me share our experiences with you...

Being novice riders, we had (with some trepidation) booked 4 days at a Dude Ranch. This was the most expensive part of our holiday (around £1000 for two of us, including food and gratuities). However, we weren't disappointed, and had excellent value for money.

We stayed at the Lazy K Bar Ranch, and were made to feel welcome the moment we arrived. After spending time in characterless motels, it was a pleasant change! The ranch has a very homely feel to it, with fruit, drinks, and home-made cookies always available. The staff made us feel welcome, and made the effort to get to know all the guests. With only 20 or so rooms, the ranch is small enough to be personal.

What about the riding? This too, was excellent. The ranch has a variety of horses, all in good condition, and you are matched with a horse to suit your riding ability. During your stay, you can keep the same horse, or select a different one. Needless to say, you do become attached to them, and are reluctant to swap.

The setting of the ranch is idylic, set amongst the desert of Tucson. The riding is varied - high rides up the mountains, or loping (a fast canter to us British) in the desert. And, once a week, there is a ride out to the local bar - perfect!

The ranch has the usual ameneties, including a swimming pool, tennis courts and a games room. The food was very good (home-style), and we managed to put on a pound or two!

There were also some unexpected delights, including a friendly donkey, which we named Ey-ore. The ranch is ideal for families as children are made to feel very welcome.

I recommend that you book direct - they have a web site (www.lazykbar.com).
