Whether or not Napoleon was right to regard Britain as a nation of shopkeepers, there seems to me no doubt that France is a nation of hoteliers. Although France does have its hotel chains, the archetypal French hotel is still an independent, often family-owned, affair. In almost any French town you will find at least one or two such hostelries, often modest in scale but providing reasonably-priced accommodation and with restaurants offering anything from hearty local fare to rarefied haute cuisine.
