Advantages: Complete hotel complex with many amenities.

Disadvantages: At the quieter end of the strip.

The luxor Hotel is right at the end of the strip opposite the airport. The theme of the hotel is obviously Egyptian and the main building is in the shape of a pyramid with a powerful light beam that is supposedly be able to be seen from the flight level in Los Angeles. Where ever you are in Las Vegas you can usually spot the beam shooting up into the sky.

In total there are over 4000 rooms in the hotel. There are two wings to the side of the pyramid which have slightly larger rooms and is a bit of a walkaway from the casino. As with all the hotels in Las Vegas they are absolutely massive and involve a lot of walking.

The hotel was opened in 1993 and has recently become quite dated and worn. However it is being revamped and is now beginnng to look quite tasteful again. You wont be spending that much time in your room anyway so it doesnt really make that much difference what your room is like. As long as its clean and comfortable and somewhere to crash. There are amoures to store your personal itemsm wardrobes, built in safe, good bathroom and a couple of chairs and sofas.

I have stayed in a suite in the pyramid and also in one of the wings with a jacuzzi near the window. Both were good and comfortable but the pyramid rooms were a bit tatty and worn but are being upgraded. To reach the rooms in the Pyramid you have to go into a lift which transports you to your floor at an angle. They are called inclinators because they go up at an inclined angle. Your room key card operates the lift. Quite unusual. Security is pretty good in the Luxor.

You wont find any clocks anywhere in the hotel as they want you to spend spend spend and in fact you could stay your whole visit in the hotel without the need to step outside at all. They dont want you to leave the hotel they want you to spend your $$ in there and will try any means to lighten your load....whether it be gambling or tacky souveniers.

The reception area and check in desks are massive and check in can take quite some time especially at weekends. The size of the hotel is quite overwhelming. Beware of time share touts offering you free show trips and other dubious gifts. They wont hastle you as long as you dont make eye contact with them. Dont be rude just say no thanks.

There are a couple of decent restaurants in the hotel and a food court. The pyramid cafe, smack bang in the middle of the hotel offers good value food for your $$'s and there is the buffet which is ok but certainly not haute cuisine. Pile it high but the quaility of the food in the buffets is not that good. REMEMBER portions of food in America are massive compared to the UK. Also tipping is expected even demanded by some of the waiting staff. I believe the staff especially in the restaurants are quite poorly paid and rely on their tips to subsidise the poor wages.

There are a number of shows and a couple of bars in the Luxor and a great swimming pool complex. There is a fake museum and an imax cinema. The neighbouring hotels are served by a tram which will take you to the Mandalay bay hotel or the Excalibar in seconds. It takes approximately 10 minutes to walk to each one from the centre of the Luxor.

What ever you do you should join the players club because everytime you gamble you are awarded points which can mean you are able to reduce your bills at the end of your stay. You can be comped money off your food or off the room depening how much you spend of course. The Luxor is now part of the MGM group so if you intend gambling in other hotels such as Mandalay bay, MGM, the Mirage, Monte carlo. excaliber use your player card to earn more points.

The hotel did seem to have become a little down market the last time I stayed there but now with the upgrade of facilities it seems a little better.

Its a great fun place to stay and despite it being at the end of the strip there are plenty of taxi's to take you onto the main strip although its not that difficult to walk there.

If you dont stay here at least make a trip to see and experience how unique it is. The inner pyramid is vast and im sure it is something you wont forget in a hurry.

Summary: Reasonable quaility hotel.

Good review. Been there, and I liked it. Didn't gamble though! There's so much else to do in Vegas!
