Advantages: Amazing Looks
Disadvantages: Sales People
The Luxor Hotel and Casino is probably the one that everybody has noticed on TV or in films as a Vegas place to go to. This is because of its Egyptian pyramid appearance and it looks spectacular which is why I think it is used everywhere. We were in Vegas and taking looks around all of the places and the Luxor was one we wanted to go to. We were a tiny bit disappointed but I will tell you why in a moment but overall we loved the Luxor.
Where
The Luxor is located on the Vegas Strip. It is towards the end of the strip but is definitely is within walking distance if you make a day out of going to all of the hotels. We were staying at the Treasure Island which is classed as the centre of the strip and it took us about 5 hours to walk to the Luxor but that was stopping at every hotel and having lunch.
The good thing is that the Luxor is by other high profile and exciting hotels such as New York New York and Excalibur so if you are not staying that side of the strip, it is worth the walk / drive down.
Appearance
When you go by the Luxor, the first thing you will notice is that it is a huge pyramid and it looks amazing. They change the appearance of the pyramid as when we were there it had a silvery look and had a Transformers advertisement over it. In fact it boasts the title of the only pyramid shaped building in the world apparently so you are seeing something very special indeed.
Outside the Luxor and you have a massive Sphinx which is amazing to see. We walked quite away from the hotel to get a decent picture of it as it is that big. Also from the outside the car parking area is huge and has Egyptian dogs as statues and looks amazing. This is just where you drop off cars and it is ace!
Inside and the whole building keeps the Egyptian feel with posts with drawings on them and as you can imagine the building is a huge pyramid so the ceiling is very high and goes up to a point at the very top. There are Egyptian statues everywhere and you can see all of the rooms going up the walls of the pyramid as there are lights everywhere.
Also inside there are buildings inside the Luxor which looks amazing and again has a very desert feel to it as you can expect from an Egyptian style hotel. In short the hotel looks big from the outside and then the inside actually looks bigger.
Things to Do
Ok so in the Luxor and obviously if you are staying here you will have massive choice of rooms. We didn't get to see one but you can choose from deluxe rooms which are right at the top of the pyramid and I can imagine are amazing.
In the Luxor you have the customary theatre which when we were there was playing Criss Angel Cirque du Soleil and to be honest it looked really good and the theatre looked amazing. We were only here forone more day and didn't fancy travelling all the way down the strip again as we had organised a trip for the morning but if we had time I would have come back to see it. I believe as well as this theatre, there is an adult only show, a comedian show and also a musical called Menopause so as you can imagine to house all of these is brilliant.
The Luxor Casino is huge and looks great as out of all of the casinos we had been to this one had the most cars and motorbikes displayed to win. They were everywhere. I think the casino had a great feel to it and I think a lot of the serious gamblers would be happy here as there was tournaments going on and several private playing rooms which looked scary to me but good I'm sure if you know what you are doing.
We didn't eat at the Luxor but there was a huge choice of places. I was intrigued by the burger bar as you could custom your burger which looked interesting. Then they had a steak house, a cafe, a buffet and a food court which sold some lighter snacks. See all of this in a hotel is just madness but hey thats Vegas for you.
While in the Luxor it was the first hotel we had been to which had actual massive exhibitions inside. The Luxor had a titanic exhibition going and also a Bodies exhibition. We really fancied going to one but at $35 each to go we couldn't afford it. They had a massive opening to the doors to them both so they looked like they do a great job with anything they put on here.
The final thing is the atrium in the Luxor which is where all of the shopping area is. It has the pearl factory which was interesting as you actually picked your own pearl fresh which was pretty cool. Then there was Egyptian style goodies which are from the Luxor so even theatre merchandise you can find here. We didn't buy anything however.
So What's Bad?
SO I mentioned a thing annoyed us at the Luxor and this was the amount of hassle we got. It was the first hotel we had been into that had so many sales people in there trying to sell you tickets. We got collared by 3 and then the fourth we listened to what he had to say but we didn't have time to do anything as we would not be in Vegas long enough. Then the next person we told we had already been spoken to and they started to interrogate us abot well have you got a card and so on. It was quite annoying !
The total number of sales people that got us was 6 which in the space of 1 hour was too much!
Conclusion
The Luxor is amazing and is worth going to see. I thought it was by far the best looking hotel and I would not have a hesitation in staying there is I ever go back to Vegas. I think it was the biggest I had initially noticed for things to do so if we had had time we could have quite happily spent another few hours here.
The only thing with Vegas though is you need a bit of money so if I had some I would spend a lot in the Luxor. I can guarantee that the Luxor hotel and casino is brilliant and that you should go and see it as you will stand there in awe staring at it. I am only going to give it 4 stars though purely because we got hassled by sales people.
Thanks for reading.

- 08/11/09 I stayed there last year, and I know exactly what you mean about the people in the lobby offering you "deals" on show tickets and tours that you don't even want! You learn after a while to just say NO THANKS and walk away... I think I'm staying at the Mirage next time. |
