Advantages: Has everything you could want at an affordable price
Disadvantages: Location, it is at the end of the strip so be prepared to drive or walk
As you drive up to this spectacular building, you cannot help but be amazed. The huge sphinx at the entrance and black pyramid are truly magnificant. From the outside the hotel seems far more refined than some of the other glittery hotels nearby, relying on silly themes and lots of lighting. The Luxor relies, totally on good looks and the wow factor - at least until you get inside! As you enter the lobby, you get an idea of just how big the pyramid really is, The egyptian theme is carried through the lobby area with more mummies etc. Look up and you will see the sheer height of the place, with the hundreds of pyramid room doors, opening onto the atrium. The casino area, behind the lobby, is like many other casinos in Vegas, very large, very noisy and lots of people, whatever time of day or night. The good thing about all the casinos is that if you don't want to spend a lot, you don't have to. The machines start at as little as 5c per game. You can quite literally spend hours in the casino and only spend $10. Accommodation There are a couple of options when checking into the Luxor, first you can have a room in the pyramid. Obviously, most people want to have a room here, but be warned, although these rooms are very comfortable etc they are restricted in size, due to the sloping wall of the pyramid. Also the bathrooms only have a shower and no bath. But they are in the pyramid! If you want slightly more space and a bath, go for a tower room. These are located in the two towers to the side of the pyramid and because they have straight walls, are much bigger. As expected they are decked out in egyptian splendor, including the wardrobes which resemble the entrance to a tomb & hide the TV. The bathroom is large and luxurious - with a bath and shower. You get a king size bed, table & chairs, ironing board etc. Very comfortable all round. As this hotel was one of five we stayed in on our journey around Calif
ornia/Nevada I cannot remember exactly how much it cost us, but I do know that it was the cheapest hotel we stayed in and one of the nicest. I think is worked out to approx £40 per room per night. Obviously these hotels are heavily subsidised by the gambling, so can afford to be cheaper. Breakfast The buffet breakfast was excellent. You pay first then get seated. Waiters serve the tea, coffee etc but it is up to you to choose your breakfast items. These range from fruit, cereals, cakes, breads and of course the eggs, bacon etc. The food mountains seem endless, you will not go hungry here. You can quite easily eat to burst and probably not want anything else till evening - good value for money. Entertainment Other than the casino there are other things to amuse you at the Luxor. These include the IMAX theatre, nightclub, IMAX simulator ride and of course the shows. Downsides There is only one thing that lets this hotel down. That has to be the location. It is the last but one hotel at the end of the strip, so you need to either drive about or walk. Because it is very very hot here, walking long distances (just to the next hotel) can really make you tired. But saying this, it is not the end of the world, so don't let it put you off.
