I have never stayed in a Mandarin Oriental Hotel before, but it is a chain I have been very interested to try out. As we had already decided that Japan was going to be a holiday of indulgence, Mandarin Oriental Tokyo seemed a very good place to try the brand. When it comes to vacations, I am something of a forward planner. But when I tried to book the hotel, a mere ten months in advance, I found that the on-line booking system would not co-operate. Karasuma Kyoto Hotel (Kyoto, Japan) - Great location Not as clean as it should be, dodgy decor

Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku (Tokyo, Japan) - Clean, modern, excellent location Small rooms and not cheap, but not many places in the area are cheap!

Keio Plaza Intercontinental Tokyo (Japan) - Easy to find. Good location. Costly, but then so are all hotels of this quality!

Tamahan Ryokan (Kyoto, Japan) - Traditional, unique, meals included This particular ryokan was expensive, three nights of authentic food is a bit too much.
