Advantages: Stunning decoration, excellent facilities
Disadvantages: Very expensive and not for vertigo sufferers!
Visiting the Marriott Marquis was always on the agenda when people came to stay with me during my four years in New York.
Location
=======
Located at 1535 Broadway, the hotel offers some unique views of Times Square, and stunning views of the entire city and beyond can be enjoyed at 'The View' - New York's only revolving restaurant located at the top of the hotel.
Features
======
My reason for taking visitors to see the hotel, is the stunning atrium lobby at the building's centre, and glass elevators servicing the 45 floors of the hotel. The entrance is extremely non-descript but deliberately so, with a bank of elevators taking you to the 8th floor reception, and it is here that you are welcomed by the opulent decoration and that breathtaking atrium.
There are several restaurants on offer at the hotel, each offer outstanding levels of service, but if you are just a visitor looking to enjoy the views of Times Square, then head to the Broadway Lounge with its floor to ceiling glass windows overlooking Manhattan's famous tourist spot. Enjoy a cocktail or two in magnificent surroundings and have a rest from pounding the streets!
The hotel also offers a great gym with a huge glass wall overlooking the atrium - enticing enough for even the most unfit to want to visit.
The Rooms
========
My husband and I actually stayed at the hotel on one occasion, and the decor of the rooms, although small, were of a high standard and well equipped with a comfortable bed, tea and coffee making facilities, and a bathroom with bath and shower.
The only problem with this hotel is ironically its main selling point - the views over Times Square. Yes they are breathtaking, but when you are trying to sleep and the curtains just aren't up to blacking out the light, you can feel like you're in thunderstorm that just won't stop!
This hotel isn't cheap either - expect to pay upwards of $300 per room per night. Remember though you are paying for a top quality hotel in one of the best locations in Manhattan, so I think it's worth the price.
Conclusion
========
In terms of staying at this hotel, if you suffer from vertigo then give this one a wide berth! However, if you're visiting Manhattan then definitely put it on your list of sights to visit - take a ride in the glass elevator all the way to the top and have a look over the edge - the view is AMAZING!!!
