Advantages: Good location, good staff, plenty under one roof, monorail station
Disadvantages: Impersonal, extremely busy, very smoky casino floor, get lost very easily!
Hmmmm..after reading previous reviews of how great this place is im apprehensive about putting this review on, however this is how i personally felt about the place.
Grand it certainly is...this place is so big its beyond belief!! This hotel had 30 floors jam packed with all kinds of rooms, lofts, penthouses etc. 5 Outdoor pools which include rivers and waterfalls, a spa, shops, nightclubs you name it MGM Grand has got it...oh yeah and real lions!!! Up to 6 lions are showcased every day in a glass sided habitat which initially is fabulous but after you have seen the talks hour after hour you begin to wonder do the lions really appreciate being stuck in a las vegas casino??
Me and my husband visited here for our honeymoon. Yes i was almost definitley impressed but as the week wore on and i seen other hotels my initial impressions were weakening. We stayed in a deluxe room which was very nice, it contained a beautiful bathroom, with walk in shower and bath and large sleeping area with huge tv (great american channels, good for a laugh) and two large queen size beds which were extremely comfy and perfect after an 11 hour flight. Our room was visited by housekeeping eveyday which is great as the hotel houses more than 5000 rooms!!
When walking around this hotel i noticed it was kept in immaculate condition, everything was ship shape and was amazed by its size, very easy to get lost in!! I noticed it had a very strange odour, hard to explain, though im told its a nice smell pumped into the air conditioning to get you to stay and to cover the smoke off cigarrettes however i found it uncomfortable and it seeped into my clothes and had to wash my hair every night as i could smell it.
I found the hotel to be extremely impersonal, maybe because of its huge scale, but it felt like a tube station, people in and out it just didnt stop. Also at the weekend MGM seems to accomodate conventions which were a nightmare, scours of people with i.d badges and folders would gather everywhere and fill the bars and restraunts making it difficult for the holidaymakers to eat anywhere and relax and enjoy their stay. The staff however were always polite when approached but they all seemed to be rushed off their feet trying to accomodate everyone.
We only ventured into the pool area once, this was only because it was so hot however it did look impressive, very clean and was told it covered 6 and a half acres!!
While we were there we watched David Copperfield in one of their theatres...absolutely fantastic!! Thats one good thing about these big hotels is that they house the very good entertainers!!
Another benefit was the location on the strip...not too far out and near other large casinos like New York New York and Excalibur...and also home to a station of the monorail which we used frequently to get up and down the strip.
Personally i wouldnt stay here again, i would opt for a smaller hotel nearer the center of the strip. I like my holidays to be a bit more personal and relaxed. However my stay was pleasant and didnt have nothing too serious to grumble about.
Summary: Good base, great rates if you can get them, however too big for me

- 19/01/09 Like you I admire the hotel for what it is.....but it's not for me either because of it's vastness |

- 15/10/08 I was very sad to see the lions when I popped into this hotel on my LV holiday. I think that most of the hotels on the strip are supersize so would not personally mark it down on that alone. |
