Advantages: The whole experience was great.

Disadvantages: It does not have a onsite restaurant, meaning a trip out every night.

What can I say about this hotel. Well, when it was booked, I was not sure about it at all. All the pictures on Expedia (where we booked the trip through) made the hotel look very dark and gothic and something that you need to really like to be able to enjoy. I was skeptical to say the least.

After arriving in New york City for the first time, we made our way from JFk airport to the hotel via one of the minibus style vans we had booked through Expedia as well. The trip from JFK to the hotel took around 45 minutes, which considering the amount of traffic in NYC, was pretty good going. We arrived midday as well, so not even when it was what you would call a quiet time (if such a thing exists) in the city.

I was pleasantly surprised on arrival at Night. It is a 8 or 9 story building that is painted completely black, but not badly, it really suits the building. To one side of the hotel is a car park entrance and on the other side is a building, followed by, shockingly, a Starbucks.

The doorman came outside and helped us with our luggage and held the 2 entrance doors open for us. The doors are very big and quite heavy, but the doorman was always there to help if you needed it. You enter straight into the lobby, which is not very big, but considering the size of the hotel, it's all in proportion.

The lobby has several seats and small tables for people to sit around, which we did when waiting for our taxi to take us back to JFK on the way home. The decor is brilliant. It is all black and white. There are no other colours. It is dark inside because of this, but again, it really suits it. There is a big erotic style picture on the wall, not porn style erotic, but classy. This picture is then split into different sections on the upper floors so you get a small slice of the bigger picture on each floor.

The reception desk is only small, again in fitting with the hotel. We were immediately greeted by a female member of staff who speedily checked us in and informed of us of everything we would need to know, like when breakfast is served, how the keys work, if you want your shoes shined, etc. We were then handed our keys and left to our own devices.

At this point, the then future wife and myself had to rush down to city hall for a certain licence to enable us to actually complete what the trip was all about. We asked the doorman how to get there and he got a map out, showed us where we were and how to get where we needed to be. Pointed out the way out the door so we headed the right way and left us with a smile.

Once back from the 'errand', we made our way to our room, where our luggage had kindly been placed for us. The room was not overly big, but I'm lead to believe this is pretty typical of all hotels in NYC. It was very comfortable though, again in keeping with the black and white theme. The sheets were white, where as the walls were a black wallpaper print with very large black curtains covering the windows, which unfortunately just had a view of the wall next door, which was considerably higher than us.

There is a ensuite bathroom, which is tiled black and white. The shower had a rainfall shower head, which was brilliant. The water pressure was exceptionally good, better than at home. We had complimentary Molten and Brown shampoo, conditioner and body lotion, which I really liked. The bottles were only small, but replaced every day if you had opened them. There was also a hair dryer in a small cupboard under the sink. Read small as a tiny shelf just capable of holding the hair dryer, so don't expect to store anything in that.

We had a small closet inside the room, but not enough room to really unpack all our clothes and hand them up. A safe was inside here to and was very simple to use. There was also an umbrella and dressing gowns in here, which came in handy.

Every morning, I would say we woke to, but I managed to wake up at 5am every day, so the wife woke to find a New York Times newspaper outside our door, which we kept for keepsakes. Every evening, a staff member came round and knocked on the door to give us a 7 day weather report, which was spot on every day.

You did not have a Do Not Disturb to hang on the door handle, instead you had a doorbell, which you could switch off and when pressed would display Do Not Disturb to the bell presser.

The breakfast was nothing to write home about, but that was mainly because I did not really eat any of the food on offer, various bits of fruit, crossiants and such like.

Housekeeping was by your choice as well. They would come into your roo everyday to re make your bed and have a general tidy, but you had the choice of wanting the sheets changed and the towels changed by leaving a sign out stating which option you would like.

The room also had a very nice flat screen TV on the wall with satelite channels, which was handy for when having a rest from all the walking you do.

I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to go to New York. It costs around the £1000 each mark by booking through Expedia, getting the flight included in that. It sounds expensive and it is, but when you get there, it could so very easily be alot more expensive than that.

It was that good, that when we went back to NYC 6 months later, we stayed there again and was even recognised by the doorman, who asked how married life was now treating us.

Oh yeah, location, how could I forget. They say on Expedia it is 5 minutes from Times Square. Don't belive that for one second, turn left out of the hotel, walk for 30-45 seconds, depending on how slow you walk and you are in Times Square. You could not get any closer without actually staying in the Novotel on Times Square.

Summary: Awesome, stay here people.
