Advantages: Amazing building and decor
Disadvantages: Not many in room amenities, pricey
The Palazzo Hotel in Las Vegas is one of the newest additions to the ever changing main strip. Towering over its neighbouring hotel, The Venetian, it is one of the tallest on the strip. My girlfriend and I spent five days and six nights there and found it a mixed experience.
The hotel itself is immense. The decor is stunning, with large fountains, waterfalls and artwork dazzling you as you walk around the ground floor. It is a lot nicer than some of the other hotels, feeling a lot newer (and rightly so) and less cramped and dingey than some of the other casinos.
The casino floor itself is a lot smaller than those in some of the other mega hotels. This in itself is not necessarily a bad thing as it prevents the hotel from becoming too cramped and busy.
Our room was a delight to stay in. Our massive window looked out over the city and desert (although unfortunately not the strip) creating a beautiful view. The window had a motorised blind which could be moved via remote control so could be done whilst lazing in bed which was nice! The room was open plan with the bathroom and toilet separate, whilst the bed and lounge formed one large room. This room had two large screen televisions, one in front of the sofa and one in front of the bed. Another television could be found in the bathroom! However, its view was obscured by the condensation if in the shower and it faced the tap end of the bath, so we were not too sure how you were meant to watch it.
Whilst the room was constantly clean and pleasant to stay in, it had no amenities such as a kettle. Since returning, it has been explained to us that the casinos obviously do not want you staying in your room, so try to get you up and out and gambling as soon as possible. There was a Starbucks located in the hotel, but it was a big drag to get up in the mornings, put on some clothes and go down in the lift to get two cups of tea and a muffin to share for about $15!!! This extravagence cost us a great deal of money unfortunately.
Within the hotel are several restaurants, all pretty upmarket and suitably trendy. However our first visit to one resulted in a nice steak for me and a disgusting fish dish for my girlfriend. Our displeasure was received with indifference and even after complaining the hotel, we received no real apology. A couple of nights later, we visited a Mexican restaurant and it was a delight, providing tasty food and a few cocktails for a reasonable price.
In another section of the hotel is a large shopping level with various designers and boutiques, but we only really paid a passing interest in these due to the sheer price of items. The hotel is linked to the Venetian so saves you the need to negotiate the strip if you prefer to stay indoors.
It is easy to get cabs to and from the hotel so travel is very easy. It is well located on the strip, only a few minutes walk from Dennys (if you fancy some cheap food), McDonalds and the Monorail. For people such as us who had not experienced the United States before, the nearest place to buy any snacks or food was a good half hour walk (unless there was somewhere closer I could not find!)
The food, drink and room service within the hotel is pretty pricey. My girlfriend had a massage in the spa area which cost over $100, but did find it a very enjoyable experience. A bottle of standard beer in the downstairs casino bar was $8 which may put off many. We found it cheaper to sit down on a cheap slot, play one cent a line, with only one line selected, then hijack the waitresses for a free drink. Make sure you give them a decent tip and make a bit of small talk and they will keep you supplied as long as you want. Its the cheapskate option, but it certainly doe the trick!
Summary: Not sure it would be worth a repeat visit, but had some great features
