Advantages: Great location, friendly staff, good pool area
Disadvantages: No air con
The wife and I love going on holiday and Tenerife is undoubtedly one of our favourite destinations. We've been there 6 times in the last 5 years and for 3 out of the last 4 visits, we've stayed at the Panorama ApartHotel, which sits just between Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje.
Now, I'll be honest right from the start - the Panorama isn't the best hotel in the world, far from it. It's only a 3-star and it lacks air conditioning. So why do we go there so much? 2 reasons really: location and price.
Location: The hotel is excellently situated near the island's biggest resort and within easy walking distance of many bars, restaurants, shops and attractions. We've previously stayed at the Riu Adeje (now called Isabel Family Hotel) and although the hotel is very nice, it's just too far away from the sea front. Staying at Panorama means that we can have a wander to Costa Adeje or Las Americas or even go further afield to Los Christianos. It really is in the perfect location.
Price: Around £650 for a couple (for a week), including flights is a pretty good deal in my opinion.
So what's the hotel like? Well, it has a fairly large pool area that has been refurbished in the last couple of years. The sun loungers are locked up each night and only opened at 9am, meaning that there's no getting up at 7 to put your towel out! Mattresses and umbrellas can be hired for Euro1,50 each per day, which does add-up over a week, but makes laying on the loungers much more comfortable. There's also a lifeguard who's on duty between 10am and 6pm, which is nice to see too.
The reception is open 24 hours a day, and although their English isn't great, they all seem to be a friendly bunch. Last time we went we had a problem when my wife cracked one of the floor tiles in the room, we reported it to reception and were moved to a new room almost immediately.
There's a pool bar which serves all your usual drinks and snacks (burgers, spag bol, omelettes, sandwiches etc) and is our preferred choice for lunch. It's roughly around Euro6 for for a meal and a drink, which is pretty good value. There's also a restaurant which serves breakfast and evening meals, however we've only ever been self-catering and so I can't tell you how good the food is there - but if the pool bar is anything to go by, it'll be pretty good!
Being self-catering means that the rooms include a kitchenette, which provides you with: a fridge (including a small freezer), a 2-hob cooker, cutlery, crockery and a toaster. The toaster is a great way to have a cheap breakfast (bread is available from the Netto - approx 100 yards away) and having a fridge is a great way to save on drinks - just get a few bottles from the supermarket, rather than buying drinks from the snack bar all the time.
The TV in the room is only fairly small and is also fairly old, but it does have quite a lot of English channels on it, including satellite ones. I don't go on holiday to watch the TV though, so the size and age didn't really bother me.
There's a maid service which operates 5 days a week, with the usual put-your-towels-in-the-bath-if-you-want-them-chang ing rule. The bath also has a shower above it, which is really powerful and an excellent way of getting that sun cream off you at the end of the day.
The Panorama isn't the best hotel in Tenerife, but for location and price, it really can't be beaten. Will we be going back again? Of course we will.
Summary: Our favourite hotel in Tenerife
