Advantages: good location, friendly staff, large bathrooms
Disadvantages: could have better restaurants on site
i stayed at the planet hollywood in september 2007 with a friend, and really enjoyed it. The hotel and casino are huge, by themselves and when combined with the 'miracle mile' shopping centre, it really makes for a giant complex... but then most things are in vegas.
upon arrival we parked in the cavernous car park and found reception easily, where we were greeted by very friendly and helpful staff, who gave us a brief explanation of the facilities available, and the layout. we then made our way up to our room and i was pleasantly surprised, the room was large and had a really big bathroom, which had 2 sinks, a plunge bath, and a seperate walk in shower. in the room there were a couple of film memorabilia things (we had the concept sketches and a model gun from Bladerunner) mounted on the walls. the beds were really comfortable, and the cleanliness standard was very high, with nice toiletries replenished every day. the down side of our room was that the view was of a building site behind the hotel, where they were building a new complex for the hotel; however we couldnt hear anything through the well insulated windows, so it didnt bother us.
the selection of food available on site was extensive, as within the hotel and casiono, you have planet dailies which serves 24hours and has huge portions of very tasty simple dishes. a word of warning - dont order a salad thinking it will be healthy, my friend did and it was huge and loaded with three types of cheese, ham and other things. the burgers are massive and really very good!
There are also a few other restaurants including a giant all u can eat buffet in the basement that has won several buffet awards in vegas, and we did give it a try and i can reccommend the rib of beef in there, but the lobster was bland and very small (not that im a fan normally but it was somewhat tasteless). the buffet is around $25-$30 per head, and well worth it if you can eat and eat...
the pool area is located on the roof and again is big, and very busy with sun worshippers, and when we were there it didnt really offer much in the way of refreshments aside from drinks at the small tiki bar.
i didnt use any of the spa facilities or gym as these were an extra cost and to be honest the spa was quite expensive. i would definately reccommend you take a walk or drive to other restaurants to get a better deal, and for the most part better food (not to say it is bad, because it was good)
The miracle mile shops seemed to go on forever and within the centre there are a few bars and places to eat which are good fun, like the big sports bar (i cant remember its name but you cant miss it) which serves american fayre and huge beers/cocktails in novelty glasses.
whilst we were visiting they were in the process of rebranding the hotel to Planet Hollywood (as it was previously the Alladin) but we didnt really come into contact with any works, and im sure the work is all finished now.
i thoroughly liked this hotel and the casino (Heart bar is smack in the middle of the casino and great for people watching), and if you want to get in some free drinks, just set yourself up at the bar and play electronic black jack at 25c a hand, as the bar staff dont charge for drinks if you are gambling; however it is very easy to get carried away as i did and gamble away $20 without finishing 1 beer, so take your time!!!
Summary: not the place to stay if you are on your honeymoon etc, but for lads its great
