Shangri La (Bangkok, Thailand)
Advantages: Amazing breakfast, lovely staff, beautiful room, good location
I used to be a travel agent, so spent a LONG time researching hotels for our honeymoon in Thailand. There are just so many hotels in Bangkok, it can be a little overwhelming at first and it's hard to know where to look. I soon learned that hotels tended to either be in 'the city' or 'the river' areas and quickly decided that we would be best suited to the hotels by the river. My husband and I were really keen to see what Bangkok had to offer, but really liked the idea of not staying completely in the hustle and bustle of the city (not for our first visit anyway). So, I looked around and the best deal we could get was for the Shangri La. It looked amazing on the website and had really great reviews on Trip Advisor, so I decided to go for it!
This hotel has a ridiculous amount of room types as there are 3 different parts to the hotel. The Shangri La wing (standard rooms), the Horizon Club (slightly posher rooms on the top floors on the Shangri La wing) and the Krungthep Wing (posh rooms in a completely separate part of the hotel). We could only afford to stay in the Shangri La wing, and booked an executive room (one above a deluxe/standard room). As it was our honeymoon, we were due an upgrade, if there was one available; so we hoped for the best. I also sent an email to the hotel a couple of weeks before we were due to travel to let them know that it was our honeymoon. I received a reply within a couple of hours stating that they would do what they could - very impressive!
We arrived in the Shangri La a bit hot and bothered, straight off a 12 hour flight from the UK and only 2 days after our wedding. The reception staff were so friendly, and upgraded us as we were on our honeymoon. We stayed in an executive room with a river view and a balcony on the 12th floor.
The hotel is immaculate and just stunning in it's decor. Our room was beautifully decorated with a HUGE flat screen TV, fresh fruit and the bathroom was massive - we had a shower and a bath, as well as the lovely Shangri La toiletries! The balcony was incredible, we spent so much time just sitting there watching the world go by on the river.
The hotel staff literally could not do enough for us. On our first full day we came back to the hotel to find a card congratulating us on our wedding and an amazing chocolate heart from their chocolate shop downstairs. On the second day we had another card, lovely flowers and rose petals on the bed.
The swimming pool was fantastic. We used it once in the evening and it was just perfect - we had the pool to ourselves! It was a decent size, and had plenty of sun loungers, it even had an area in the pool with bubbles which was lovely.
Breakfast was out of this world - I have never seen so much food on a buffet before! There really was something for everyone, but it was all amazing. There were Thai specialities alongside your typical fry up, as well as exotic fruit, all kinds of breads and pastries. There were also chefs who would cook eggs or omelettes to order, these were divine!
We didn't eat in the hotel (apart from room service one night) as it was very expensive. The one night we had a drink in the bar, our bill (for 2 drinks) cost more than our 2 course meal. There were around 5 different restaurants in the hotel, all of which looked lovely, but they cost more than we were prepared to pay, plus we wanted to get out and about in the city. As mentioned, we ordered room service one night as we got back very late and hadn't eaten. We both ordered spaghetti carbonara, which came very quickly and was delicious!
The location is good. We didn't want to be right in the city centre, and being by the river certainly suited us well. The hotel is right by the Skytrain which is really easy to use (about 60p to get most places) and also by a pier where you can get a ferry to the Grand Palace. We walked out and about from the hotel, where there are lots of markets and little shops, this all felt very safe. One night we got a taxi to take us to a fairly busy area for dinner, which was well priced and we got a Tuk Tuk back to the hotel.
On checking out, the reception staff couldn't have been nicer, and really did make our stay extra special for us. Overall, we loved our stay here and wouldn't hesitate to come back.
Summary: Amazing hotel, wouldn't hesitate to go back!
