On our recent trip to Rome, we stayed at Star Hotels Michaelangelo (4 stars), which was right outside the Vatican, a few minutes' walk away from St Peters Basilica. It is in a rather quiet residential district, with a few souvenir shops and restaurants nearby, and a supermarket about 10 minutes away. In this way, it is calm and not at all busy; in fact rather deserted in the nearby streets!
Upon arriving, the rather attractive receptionist sorted out our room within ten minutes and gave us the key- A small metal key with a bulky and heavy key chain (or some sort of unnecessary ornament) that made it weigh like 2 kilograms. It was completely useless and lugging it around with us on your days out was inhumane.
The rooms were spacious and they offered a triple room which was exceptional as there were only three of us, and making us pay for two twin rooms would've been evil. Despite it being so close to the Vatican City, the view we got was abysmal- locals hanging their clothes out onto the balcony is hardly appealing to the average tourist. Nonetheless, they had air conditioning, a TV and a good sized bathroom.
The maids/cleaning ladies of the hotel are also quite friendly; they would say hi and bye and are polite to ask if it is OK to clean your room when and so on. Usually after such negotiation, our room would be clean upon our return which was nice; they stock up the toiletries regardless if you have used them up or not to ensure you have enough and makes the beds. They did not disturb our personal belongings or steal our things.
Our booking included breakfast, which consisted of a range of breads and pastries (croissants, brioches), a range of hams and cheeses, cereal, a fruit bowl, yoghurt, bacon, egg and fruit juice. Yes, it was quite limiting as I could name them all!! Staying a day or two here would be fine, but by the third day, you've pretty much tried everything and the food just isn't as appealing as it was the first day you arrived. I wish there was more hot food, but I was able to survive on the fruits, yoghurts and breads- a healthy few days for me!
We knew the hotel was close to the Vatican and predicted that it was a walkable distance from the city centre where all the major tourist sites are, which indeed it is, but did not know it involved walking through a ghastly tunnel (we saw a dead bird on our way) which was not at all pleasant.
As we booked our trip on Expedia, it came as a package and for three people to stay in this hotel for four days+ flight + tax came to a total of £800 which we thought wasn't bad. The service was quite good and the staff made an effort to help. We enjoyed our stay at this hotel, but will consider a hotel closer to the city next time.
NOTE: How much are you supposed to tip the porter? This "etiquette" was not something I learnt so we were quite unsure as to what to do... someone please enlighten me for next time.
