Advantages: Comfortable, recently renovated hotel. Free parking

Disadvantages: No razor socket

Picture the gold rush in 1860, and later the arrival of the Canadian Pacific railway and you can understand why Kamloops in British Columbia, at the confluence of two branches of the Thompson River became an important city. It has over 92,000 residents and this is increased regularily when the Rocky Mountaineer train rolls into the station. The hotel is just a few minutes from the shops, musuems etc in Downtown Kamloops, and very close to restaurants.

The day we arrived in Kamloops, it had been raining and we were glad that the hotel had efficient air conditioning because it was very humid. Check in was very fast as we were given keycards before we left the Rocky Mountaineer train, and our cases had already been delivered to our rooms. Reception was a mixture of stone walls and woodwork and had a few settees and chairs, some people took the lifts and others the stairs and we were soon in our comfortable bedroom.

There were 98 bedrooms and suites, some of the two bedroomed suites will sleep up to 6 people, useful for families. There is wireless internet throughout the hotel and this is especially useful as it is a conference hotel with several large meeting rooms.

Bedrooms
We were on the De-luxe floor, the bedroom was bright and airy with a view of the distant hills and parts of the town. There were two queen sized beds (with 850 coil count, I take their word for it, I didn't count them!) with the lovely pillow top mattress covers, and beautiful white cotton duvet covers, which I noticed in the information you could buy to have the same quality linen at home! The throw was in gold velour and gold covered cushions. The curtains were heavy gold patterned and also net curtaining.
There were two cream coloured easy chairs and the wooden unit housing the television was in mahogonay. A small round table, bedside tables with drawers and plenty of lights were in the main bedroom area, a fridge and another table with coffee machine, ice bucket etc were nearer the entrance and the fitted wardrobe, which had an ironing board and iron and safe, and two lovely fluffy white dressing gowns. A clock radio and telephone ensured we were up in time for our departure the following morning. When we returned from dinner we found two large shaped chocolates wrapped in sellophane and tied with a bow, one was a saw and the other a hammer! This is Lumberjack country.
Again a wonderful nights sleep, I decided that the soft feather mattress covers make such a difference that on coming home we have invested in one!

Bathroom
The shower was over the bath, and there was plenty of room for toilet bags on the washbasin unit. Excellent toiletries, plus a large bottle of shower gel and shampoo. Plenty of towels, as the room could sleep four. A shoe cleaner pad and sewing kit was also provided. Good lighting over the mirror and a good hair drier too.

Facilities
There was an indoor swimming pool, jacuzzi and fitness centre, and also a recreational room were you could play pool. There was a kiosk near the front desk if you needed any odd items, and a bank cash machine in the lobby. An ice machine was near the elevator on the first floor so convenient for all guests, and a cold drinks and sweets machine near the swimming pool.

It is a smoke free hotel with a fine of $250 if caught smoking! They also have green initiatives in place, and recycle plastic and paper and offer guests the choice of when to change linen.

Stone Cellar Restaurant
This was attached to the hotel but across the entrance for the under ground car park, which was free. A bistro atmosphere, stone walls, comfortable leather seats and glass topped tables, with linen napkins. There was a special menu for the Rocky Mountaneer guests, a fusion of mostly Canadian dishes and Thai, my husband had Chicken Thai soup, British Columbian Pork chop with pear chutney and coleslaw and American Cheesecake, and I chose Caesar salad, a British Columbian Steak with organic vegetables and Garlic parmesan Mash, and a de-constructed Black Forest Gateau. Wine was a very expensive extra! It was all well presented and there was good service, plus everything we was delicious.
We left early and had breakfast on the train but they serve a de-luxe continental buffet, for $10.50. There was a free coffee available from flasks for people leaving early.

Cost
Checking on the internet it would be from $159 about £80 per room, from May to September to stay in the De-luxe room and from $139 in the De-luxe room per night.

We enjoyed our night at this hotel, it had been recently renovated, with new carpet in the corridors and the bedrooms were also new and nicely decorated and furnished.

Summary: Good hotel in downtown Kamloops.
