Advantages: Great Location and great staff

Disadvantages: Not so great mobile phone reception

During my work travels I have stayed in many Glasgow hotels and have found the Thistle to be one of the best. It is situated smack bang in the middle of the city centre making it ideal for commuting throughout the city and for evening entertainment. The main nightlife of Glasgow and a wide variety of eateries are just a 5minute walk from the hotel and 2mins down the same road is a large UGC cinema - ideal for passing evenings on your own during business trips.

The hotel itself has a large modern reception, with check in located to the right as soon as you walk in and concierge on the opposite side. The reception staff are very friendly and attentive whether in person or on the phone, I have never had to let the phone ring more than twice before it has been answered and my query dealt with.

There is a large variety of rooms on offer at the hotel from single to executive suits. The hotel is currently going through refurbishment floor at a time, starting at the top. The newly refurbished rooms are quiet modern with all amenities and look very fresh and comfortable. The rooms on lower floors that have not been refurbished are still in great order though tend to be decorated in a more old fashioned way. All rooms have tea making facilities, television, safe and mini bar, along with hairdryer and basic toiletries. Most rooms also have a trouser press and iron. Dressing gowns and slippers are available upon request for the duration of your stay.

The hotel has many options for eating with a full and varied room service menu (£5 tray charge), silver service restaurant and if eating in the bar you can choose from the bar menu (very similar to the room service menu) or the restaurant menu. Breakfast is served in the restaurant with a wide range of cooked breakfast, cereals, fruit and pastries. I have had several meals as well as breakfasts and always found the food to be very fresh and enjoyable; the room service has always been very quick indeed.

The hotel also has a swimming pool, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi along with a beauty room. I have never used the beauty room although it looks very well equipped and uses good brands such as dermalogica, the prices also seem reasonable. The swimming pool is quiet small but more than adequate for a quick dip at the end of a long day. The sauna and steam room are also small but I have never found them to be too busy to use. Towels are provided for guests but you will need a pound coin for the lockers.

The only problem I have ever found with this hotel is the mobile phone reception. I carry two mobiles (work and personal) and they are on different networks but neither gets any reception in the bar and reception can be patchy throughout the hotel.

Really great hotel though with friendly staff and good food.

Summary: Lovely hotel, great staff and great food.
