Advantages: Location, it had a deli downstairs
Disadvantages: Room was small and needed updating
I stayed at the Wellington hotel on my second trip to New York, and the decision was based on a recommendation from the Travel Agent.
There were a few people in reception when we arrived at 3.30pm, and it took about half an hour to be checked in. There was quite a large lobby area with chairs and a sofa so we could sit down while we waited.
We had booked one double room and one twin room for our party but were told that there was no twin rooms available so we would have to have a double with a foldaway bed, which someone would bring to the room. When it arrived there was no way I would be sleeping on it as it seemed to be about 30 years old and ready to collapse at any minute. Fortunately I was staying with my sister so it wasn't really a huge problem that we shared a double bed.
I wasn't really happy with the room itself, it was small and the view was of an apartment building not even the street. It was in dire need of updating in the bathroom with rusty pipes clearly visible underneath the sink, and the tiles needing either replacing or regrouting, but it was clean and there was no repeat of the giant bug that I experienced at the Milford Plaza. It was quiet on that side of the hotel, no noise from the street, so the only thing that kept me awake at night was the sound from the room next door's tv.
There were no tea or coffee making facilities in the room, but with the deli downstairs it wasn't too much of a problem if you wanted a drink in the morning. There was a room service menu in the room, where you called down to the deli and they brought it upstairs to you but they generally do require a tip for doing so. There was a small newsagents shop downstairs for souvenirs and drinks and snacks which was convenient and stayed open until late so you didn't have to go outside the hotel if you wanted something to eat or drink as a snack.
The location of this hotel is great, just a few minutes walk to either Central Park or Times Square and you could easily stand and hail a taxi. On foot, we walked to Bloomingdales, FAO Schwartz and Times Square.
There are a number of deli's for food, notably the Park Cafe underneath the hotel or the Benash Deli across the street. There is the Molyvos Greek Restaurant right nextdoor but we never tried it so I can't comment on the food.
On checkout we booked a taxi to the airport through the hotel. It was described as a town car and I think was a little bit more spacious inside than the yellow cabs. It was $70 plus tip, and they called you in reception when the car was ready.
This hotel is a good base for travelling to New York. I don't think there was anything terrible about it and it is a good mid priced hotel.

Summary: Not terrible but not very good either.
