Travelodge (Sunderland Central)
by Torialou Travelodge Sunderland Central I am writing this review on the Central Travelodge Sunderland not the new one located at Sunderland High Street West. I have used this hotel many times over the years, mainly because of it's location to Sunderland Empire. It is only 2 minutes walk to the theatre and I see quite a few ... shows there, so sometimes choose to stop at this hotel. This hotel is one of your standard old style Travelodge hotels, there are double rooms that can sleep up to two adults and have a single double bed and then family rooms which have a double bed and a sofa bed. These rooms can cater for 3 adult's and 1 child or 2 adults and 2 children. The reason that these rooms are not suitable for a fourth adult is that the mattress that pulls out from under the sofa bed is too small for an adult to sleep upon. As far as I am aware this hotel has the original bath with shower set up in all rooms. I am yet to have a shower room at this hotel if there are any. FACILITIES This hotel has no cafe/bar of it's own, however there is a Weatherspoons under the hotel which is perfectly adequate for a breakfast or meal for many. If not the hotel is only 2 minutes walk to the centre of town so there is plenty of choice. PARKING This hotel does have 10 parking spaces, however I will warn anyone using this hotel to park with great caution!! Although I have heard that it is now illegal to clamp in private car parks a few years ago when stopping at this hotel with my mum we were clamped and upon checking as of today their website still says that they do clamp. Anyway the warning! The 10 spaces are only for guests of the hotel, we were travelling over 2 hours in the car so we actually arrived at the hotel 20 mins before our 3pm check in. This was before the early check in option was available and they were very strict about the check in time. As we were guests of the hotel we parked our car in the car park and went into weather spoons under the hotel for a quick drink until we checked in. When we came back out our car had been clamped because until you check in you are not a guest of the hotel! At check in we were provided with a slip of paper to place in the car to show we were a guest. In my opinion this was an awful system and very unfair to clamp guests simply awaiting checking in. ROOMS The rooms at this hotel really are hit and miss, I have had some that are alright but I have had others that I can only describe as disgusting! The rooms are your basic Travelodge rooms, they have bedding, towels, toilet roll, a bar of soap, kettle, teabags, coffee, milk, sugar and mugs. Upon check in on this particular occasion my mum discovered that the mugs were filthy, I would say that they had not been cleaned out from the last guest they were that dirty. I ended up using the soap in the bathroom to wash them out so we could have a cup of tea. The vanity area of the room had also not been wiped down from the previous occupants, they had clearly spilt some alcohol or fizzy drink, the vanity was stained, ringed and sticky but worst of all, the previous occupants had left us a nice bit of their hair stuck into this sticky mess that had not been cleaned up. The light fittings were also covered in a layer of dust so thick that mum wrote a letter in it and these were also topped and finished off with a bit more hair for decoration! There was also a filthy layer of dust on the toilet roll holder in the bathroom. The towels and bedding however were clean enough. As is usual with Travelodge hotels the sofa bed is not made up for you so you are required to do this yourself. LOCATION This hotel is about half a mile from the main train station in Sunderland and around 2 minutes walk to the main shopping centre and shops. A word of warning there are pubs/clubs under the hotel and along the same street as the hotel so you can get noise coming from these at times, however I will admit to finding them often perfectly quiet. In fact the most noise I have experienced from the pubs was the staff binning the bottles in the early hours but friends have said from other rooms that their had heard the music. The back of the hotel over looks a busy road so this also can be noisy. SUMMERY This hotel is alright for a single night stop, it can be hit and miss the quality of the rooms, it is worn and tired and I have had to change rooms sometimes because they were just to dirty for my liking. We have never again taken the car after the clamping incident and I really would warn customers to park with caution and check with the staff on check in about their current policy. Because of it's location I would give this hotel 3 stars, however because of the amount of problems and the run down state of the hotel I am taking one star away and feel that this hotel has the value of 2 stars. Whilst I have no issues with a room being basic, I do not feel there is any excuse dirty rooms. Read the complete review |

Travelodge Scarborough St Nicholas (North Yorkshire)
by daisy_jean Firstly, I will start by saying - we have stayed at this Travelodge twice. Once back in 2011, when it was still fairly new and fresh, and then again recently at the end of April. A little bit of information about the Travelodge firstly. It is in a lovely location in Scarborough, situated on St Nicholas Cliff on the South ... Bay. It is directly opposite The Grand, and a short walk from both the town and the Cliff Lift down to the sea front. It has 140 rooms across 5 floors, with disabled access rooms also. There are 2 lifts servicing the different floors. There is a bar/cafe, which provides drinks and standard pub-style food, and there is also a large breakfast room. Breakfast is provided for a charge (which is cheaper if previously booked online), and 2 children can eat free per paying adult. Breakfast is buffet style, with a range of cereals available, toast and preserves, as well as cooked breakfasts. Something to suit all. Also you are able to check in from 3pm and check out is at 12pm the morning after. Early check-in / late check-out is available in some hotels for an additional fee. Right, our experiences. I will start with our first trip back in May 2011. This was our first short trip away with our daughter - then aged 11 months. We have stayed at numerous Travelodges over the years, with mixed experiences. We booked the Scarborough one simply because it was cheap and cheerful - we paid £44 for 2 nights (midweek) which, when teamed with very cheap train travel, worked out at a good budget break for the price. We arrived to a warm welcome, shortly after check-in time of 3pm, by excellent front of house staff - they were pleasant and professional, and quickly dealt us our keycards (we got 2, just in case!). We made our way to the lift (which you needed a keycard to activate operation for from the ground floor), which was very very small. We were crammed in - 2 adults, 1 small child, a small case and a folded pushchair - they are not big lifts at all. But it worked and it got us to where we needed to be. Upon arriving at our room, we were thrilled. It was huge, clean and very well maintained. It had the usual desk area with kettle and tea/coffee sachets. There was a wall-mounted television, and the hanger area for clothes. There was a small neat bathroom, with a 3/4 sized bath (great for our daughter, but we were far too tall for it!) and a overhead shower. But the best feature of the room had to be the massive bay window, with the sea view. We could see over the bay beautifully, and our daughter was particularly enthralled by this, as the sofabed made it an ideal viewing point! We were very impressed with our room - everything worked (if you've stayed in a travelodge before, you'll know how rare this is!), and we had hot water. The room made our stay a very enjoyable experience, and we encountered no problems during this stay - it made for a very pleasant first break with our little one! I will not comment on meals for that stay, as we didn't opt for breakfast on that occasion - preferring to go local instead. But overall, we were impressed, and it certainly influenced us into booking again at a later point. However, having recently been back in late April (2013), I can safely say we will not be returning again at any point soon. How things change... Upon our second stay, we were again greeted well by the front of house staff. But that was about the best experience. It's safe to say that the St. Nicholas Travelodge is in need of some maintenance work - upon having a drink in the bar, peeling wallpaper and mildew is visible on the walls. The room itself, although clean, was pretty much up in the attic this time - no bay window, although you could just about see the sea still. The bathroom was as big as the actual bedroom, but could easily have been in a hostel - again needing some maintenance. We had no hot water on the evening - nothing from the hot tap, the bath or even the shower. After a busy day though, we were too shattered to trail back downstairs to complain (on the 4th floor, right at the side of the hotel), so made-do. Fortunately we did have hot water the morning after - almost like they'd paid the meter! The large curtain in our room was also half hanging down too, which made it tricky (although not impossible) to close it fully, not helped by the sheer height of the windows. We did book breakfast for this stay - the standard cooked breakfast was cooked to order because the hotel was so quiet (rather than be sat out for hours on end) - we must have only seen a handful of others during our stay. The breakfast and range of cereals etc, was of decent standard. It pleased my husband and daughter, so must have been okay. But after seeing the maintenance issues, I won't be hurrying back. It's a shame, so much potential for this hotel with it's ideal location, but if it continues to fall into disrepair, the Premier Inn around the corner may reap the benefits. Travelodge (Blackpool South Promenade)
by angelboouk When we decided that we fancied returning to Blackpool this year, we decided to go by train rather than as part of a package tour. We decided to book a Travelodge for our stay. There are two Travelodge hotels in Blackpool but we chose the one that best fitted our needs. We stayed here for 5 nights (Wednesday to Monday) and this review ... discusses our experience of this hotel. ~Travelodge South Promenade~ Balmoral Road South Shore Blackpool FY4 1HR 0871 984 6191 This hotel is located right next to the Pleasure Beach and is a few minutes from both the South and Pleasure Beach rail stations. It takes only a minute or two to walk to the hotel from the promenade and it is in close proximity to both the Sandcastle and the South Pier. Trams and buses stop here too. There is an on-site car park which can accommodate 16 cars at a cost of £8.00 per 24hour period. We arrived into the Pleasure Beach rail station and hopped in a taxi with our suitcases. This hotel was in a perfect location for us and looks very clean and modern from the outside. It is perfectly suitable for those in wheelchairs and with pushchairs. The hotel is fully non smoking. Check in is from 3pm and check out is by 12pm but you can extend this for a charge. ~Booking, Check-in/Check-out~ We booked this hotel through the Travelodge website. My friend allowed us to make use of a family and friends discount and it was very easy to book. We booked five seperate nights to take advantage of a special discount and printed off the emailed documents. Payment was taken there and then as we were booking a saver price rather than a flexible price. We paid £14.99 per midweek night and just short of £50 for the Saturday night which I felt was good value for money. During our stay, a couple arrived and paid around £67.00 to check-in for that night. I would advise to book in advance as rooms start from £19.99. They offer double/twin and family rooms. We arrived at the hotel just after 3pm and were checked in quickly. We were given a key card which is needed to access the hotel after a certain time and to gain access to the different areas of the hotel and of course, our room. Check-out was a simple task of handing in our key card. Because we had booked seperate nights, our key card needed re-activated each day but this was a quick process. ~Customer Service~ We met a few staff during our stay at this hotel and found them to be helpful and friendly. At busy times, they did seem to be short staffed and we often found the receptionist doing multiple jobs including serving food/drinks. One particular lady was very friendly and chatty towards our son which I appreciated. Our rooms were cleaned daily and beds made but we didn't actually see the maids as we were out early. ~The Hotel and Our Room~ The hotel in general was very clean and tidy throughout. On entering, the reception, bar area, toilets and a vending machine were there. Rooms are located over three floors and in two different sections of the hotel. Access is via stairs and lifts. We were on the third floor so made good use of the lift. I was pleased to see that our room was at the front of the hotel and overlooked the Pleasure Beach! We had room 306 and it was easy to find as the hotel is well sign posted. We booked a family room which included a double bed and a sofa bed with a pull out section underneath. Our room was very spacious and very typically 'Travelodge'. If you are looking for something special and fancy then you won't get it here. The room had white walls, a white blind (and no curtains!) and the only decor was a red printed picture on one wall. I would describe our room as being comfortable for my little family. Travelodge don't really offer space for you to store your clothes but we did have a ledge with some coat hangers, a long mirror and a desk/chair with a kettle and coffee sachets. Our room was clean. We slept well and found the sheets and pillows to be plentiful. Our bed had built in lights which looked really cheap and silly. The lighting in the room wasn't great as one light was too bright and the other didn't work and had no cover on it. My sons bed wasn't made on arrived and whilst he never complained about being uncomfortable, I lay on his bed and found it to be too 'springy' feeling - I couldn't have slept there! The bathroom was clean and stocked with a small bar of soap, plastic cups and toilet rolls. We were also provided with a good supply of towels which were replenished daily as and when required. The bathroom had a smaller than average bath and a shower head over it. I really wish Travelodge would allow the shower head to be adjusted but it is stuck to the wall and is quite high up. We found the shower to be easy to control and there was a plentiful supply of hot, powerful water. Whilst there was no curtains in the room, the blind did a good job of blocking out all light. We experienced various weather whilst staying here and some nights we had to open the windows for some air. The windows only open a small way and could have been cleaner. When closed, all noise was blocked out but we did experience a small amount of noise from others in the lobby. The heater was easy to control and warmed the room up quickly. A small television was mounted to the wall but was very temperamental - not all Freeview channels were there and they seemed to jump about quite a bit. Overall, we found our room to be fine for our needs. We aren't overly fussy people and as long as it is clean and spacious, we are happy. We didn't mind living out our suitcases for 5 nights and found it comfortable to relax in at night when it was cold and wet outside. Wi-Fi is free in the cafe bar area of the hotel but is supposed to be charged in the rest of the hotel (from £5.00 per hour). We took the laptop to watch films at night and managed to log in to the internet from the third floor for free - wahey! ~Food and Drink~ This is the first Travelodge that we have stayed at that have a cafe bar. This area isn't huge but is clean, tidy and comfortable to sit in for something to eat. They serve breakfast here from 7am-10am (I think) and other food from 5pm - 10pm. There is a 24hour service offering pizza and other snacks. We had our breakfast here on two mornings and our dinner one evening. We chose to eat out on the other days. Breakfast is £7.65 and children eat for free. The breakfast here is usually served on the bar and on a hot plate but on our last day, they weren't bringing food out and were only offering a 'plated' service which was rather annoying as we were paying for a buffet breakfast! Anyway, the food was plentiful when served up properly and we enjoyed it. There was a nice selection of cooked items including scrambled eggs (no other types of eggs), sausages, bacon, beans and tomato. The sausages in particular were delicious and we all loved them. Also included in the buffet is fresh mandarin and grapefruit, croissants, muffins. bread to toast, yoghurts and various boxes of cereal. Apple and orange juice were included as was coffee and tea. There was lots there and we enjoyed our breakfast and considered it good value for money. We did find that there was a much better selection at the nearby Brewers Fayre though even if it was a little bit more expensive but I do feel that they do well to offer a cooked breakfast. A breakfast bag is also available. Food is replenished and served piping hot. As I said, we had dinner here once as we wanted to try out other restaurants for dinner. I highly recommend the Grill at the end of the road as it offers delicious meals. Anyway, the dinner menu was varied and there is something to suit all including soup, fish and chips, burgers, lasagne and pizza alongside delicious desserts. Children have the option of 5 meals including macaroni and cheeseburgers. Prices are fairly reasonable given the portion sizes. We opted for a combo sharing platter for two which included chicken wings, gourjons, bacon skins and other nibbly treats which was lovely. We followed with a burger platter for two which my fiance found to be okay but nothing special. It included little burgers, chips, onion rings and sauces for dipping. We shared a sticky toffee pud which was divine! Our son had chicken teddies with chips and ice cream for dessert which he enjoyed. I believe we paid around £30.00 for our meal including drinks which was good as it filled us up well. Drinks in the hotel are quite expensive. £1.65 for a Fruit Shoot and £1.40 for a bottle of water or a 200ml bottle of Pepsi. My fiance bought two bottles of Budweiser for £6.00 and there is a wide range of spirits and alcopops available. The bar area isn't somewhere I would choose to sit and relax with a drink though. The vending machine was also expensive - £1.20 for crisps and 80p for chocolate. ~Conclusion~ This hotel was fine for us and we were happy with the standard of room and service. It isn't perfect but for the price we paid, it was better than I expected. I have stayed at four Travelodge hotels and found this one to great and we would happily return. The Pleasure Beach is literally on your doorstep - so close that when you look out the window, you can see inside the Valhalla and can watch the Big One rollercoaster doing its rounds - just ideal for us!
