Thistle Bloomsbury Hotel (London)
by Densiegirl
I stayed here a couple of years ago and although the location is great for theatre and shopping the hotel badly needed a refurbishment. I note now from their website that this is currently happening and the hotel has been renamed The Kingsley. It would appear that the refurb is due to be completed in June 2009.
The building ... itself would have been lovely in its day, it is Edwardian and I do hope that they manage to keep the character and features from that time whilst updating the rooms to a high standard.
The hotel was clean and comfortable, but the ensuites were quite small and had cracked and missing wall tiles. The rooms were not huge but of a reasonable size for central London. We were not disturbed by any outside noise, again a plus for the location. It was competetively priced for the location, but the shabbiness did let it down.
Breakfast was the usual buffet and we had no complaints there. The staff were very friendly and the concierge in particular was exceptionally helpful. They stored luggage for us as we had arrived pre check in time and were not leaving until later in the day on the departure day, so no faults there. We did eat one night in the bar and again no complaints with that.
I have given this hotel 4 stars as other than the need of a refurb there was no other faults with the hotel, and as this is currently being addressed I would say it should soon be an excellent hotel to stay in - as long as they dont massively increase their rates. Read the complete review |

Britannia Hotel (Birmingham)
by Lulu101
I stayed at this Hotel in December 2008 with my boyfriend, we got a good rate i think we paid about £45 excluding breakfast for a saturday night.
The external appearance of the hotel is nice and is an oldish style building, and the location is excellent as it is on New Street its a few minutes walk from the main shopping ... centre the Bullring, and Victoria Square. It is about a 10 minute walk to get to Broad Street the major clubbing area of Birmingham, and about the 5 - 10 minutes to get to the Arcadian Centre and China Town.
The lobby is nice, the staff did seem like they just wanted to check you in and get rid of you as soon as possible but they were not rude, just not very pleasant. At check out stage we asked to leave our bags and they said no as the luggage room was full, which i think was very unhelpful. The room we had was quite small, and looked more like a house than a hotel, with the decor. It was quite floral and well...'homely'. The bed was not very comfortable to be honest and i did not get a very good nights sleep.
The bathroom was nice, probably the best part of the room, there was a bath, shower, toilet and sink and was quite big and was nice and clean.
I did not actually eat at the hotel so unfortunately i cannot comment on the food or beverage.
In my honest opinion, this is not the best hotel i have stayed in and i probably wouldnt stay here again as there are much better hotels in Birmingham for not much more. Read the complete review |

Copthorne Tara Hotel (London)

I stayed here about a week a go and i have to say i was really impressed. The rooms were great and the breakfast was just as fantastic. I stayed in a twin room which had a tv with 12 channels an fantastic bathroom with a bath and shower there was a mini bar and tea and coffee making facilities. I really enjoyed my stay and would really ... recommend it to everyone i stayed as part of a college trip with a group of 58 and they treated us so well. I was really impressed by the service from all the staff and if there was any problem then they were always happy to help. Its a great location in close proximity to some attractions and only just around the corner from a tube station. I would really recommmed this to anyone i had a really enjoyable stay and would definately go back. I really enjoyed the continental breakfast and was very happy to be seated at a table and served tea and coffee to me i wasn't expecting that. Prices are quite reasonable for a 4 star hotel i seem to rember a family room is £245 a night. There are anumber of facilities available including wifi, computers, cafe, shop, guest services, gym and beauty treatments Read the complete review |
