      Wasted potential, Fawlty Towers was never this grubby.

      I'm giving the Adelphi one star because it has a lovely exterior, a fabulous lounge and a great location.

      That's not enough to maintain a hotel. I stayed here for a wedding in winter. The "exclusive" wedding rate was higher than the internet rate for the rooms, and didn't include breakfast. Our room was furnished with vintage 1970s furniture, we rolled into the saggy dent in the middle of the mattress and there was a disturbing amount of dust and dirt, not to mention old cigarette burns, on the furniture. The bathroom was similarly old and dirty and smelled of, well, unwashed bathrooms.

      Worse, the radiator was broken - the temperature was barely above freezing outside and we could see our breath in the room. We complained and they sent a tiny portable space heater up - someone came into the room and turned it off while we were out.

      We were also paying the bill of my brother in law. He borrowed an iron - they charged a £10 deposit to our account and refused to refund it because he rather than we returned it.

      The experience was dire, and when we complained our letter was ignored. We won't repeat it.

      I stayed there with someone else footing the bill but would still never repeat the experience!

      As a regular visitor to Liverpool (originally from there and go back to see family), I had the misfortune to stay at the Adelphi Hotel for a night a couple of years back.

      My sister and I shared a twin room, which if I was being polite would called careworn, and if I was feeling less generous I would say was downright shabby. The dust on the furniture was ridiculous, the bathroom looked dirty and smelled and there was a smell of dampness pervading the whole room.

      Our Dad had booked the room for us and attached his card details to the room asking us to make ourselves comfortable and use whatever we wanted and charge it to him (we're not princesses, believe me this is a one off and any self respecting princess would not stay at the Adelphi!).

      The first problem came when we ordered room service and were asked to pay at the door. We explained that the order was to be charged to the card attached to the room booking and were rudely told that we either paid cash now or didn't have it. We told them to keep the order and went out for something to eat and drink. We complained to the receptionist who said that any further orders would be charged to the card and apologised and we thought no more of it.

      The room was booked on a bed and breakfast basis so when we went down to breakfast we duly made our way up to the breakfast buffet and sat down and were promptly asked for our room number. We were then told it was £10 per person for breakfast and we had to pay there and then. We explained that the room had been booked on a B and B basis and therefore breakfast should be included but if there was some kind of error to charge it to the card. The lady who dealt with this did so loudly, in the middle of the restaurant and very indiscreetly and physically picked our plates up so we could not eat until she had resolved the payment issue. I was disgusted and dumfounded. We told her we'd rather not stay for breakfast as she had now handled our food and made us feel rather ridiculous, went to reception to check out and found our breakfast elsewhere.

      I did write to the management afterwards and received a ridiculously innefectual response and a voucher for a discount next time I stayed at one of their hotels. Needless to say the voucher went unredeemed!

        As a foreigner and a former student of Liverpool University it was my dream to visit Liverpool again and show my beloved city to my best friend. I took this trip but with a difference. My 4 years sweetest dream became my worst nightmare, because of choosing staying at Adelphi Hotel, which by the way is the worst hotel in the whole world ever.
        When we checked in, the receptionist- while sucking his caramel- asked for my card to swipe for security, and he asked me to sign for ₤490, money that the room was about to cost for a 7- nights stay. I did so, and I got the key for our room, which was on the 7th floor. When the door of the lift opened I couldn’t believe in my eyes. The scene was scary, like the long, dark corridor we were walking on, in order to reach our room. We opened the door and what? A very old furnished room, with a very old and dirty bathroom from which black water was leaking, a glassed door playing the role of the main door of the room, with no security at all except our “ancient” key, dirty carpets and pillowcases as we saw and last but not least no central lighting.
        Our next move was to go downstairs and ask for another room hoping to be cleaner first of all and secondly closer to the lifts, because we were afraid to walk to the dark corridors for about 3 minutes in order to reach our room. We were two girls alone you see!
        The receptionist had to ask for the manager on duty to come in order to change us room because he “couldn’t understand” as he said, why our room was dirty and we did not like it.
        After some efforts he changed us room and gave us one on the 5th floor. We were relieved until we were there. The room was near the lifts but everything else was exactly the same. The same unhoovered carpet (imagine that I found an earring and some used napkins under my bed), the same filthy bathroom with some blood on the curtain, the same darkness (no central lighting but just two table lamps), and very cold inside because the radiators were off, and we had to open them, because someone thought that our hands could also be pincers!!!
        Anyway, we decided to stay and not leave immediately because we were very tired after being to an airplane for about 5 hours which landed to Manchester airport.
        The next day we decided to visit some friends in Liverpool and we were the most of the time out looking also for another hotel-something difficult because it was the 2nd of January and most of the hotels would have available rooms after the 3rd of the month. So, we were “trapped” to this disgusting hotel.
        On the 3rd of January we made a small journey around Liverpool and before going back to Adelphi we stopped by a hotel and ask for a room. The nice and polite there told us that the room would be available next morning, but unfortunately was very late. When we returned to our room in Adelphi at approximately 10 o’clock our nightmare began.
        When we unlocked our door we tried to switch on a light but nothing. All switches were off including the main switch. To switch on a light took us about one to two minutes and then was the time that we realized that something was not going well. When the lights were on we realized that our floor was full of some cotton buds, our window (and to be precise both windows the one behind the other) was opened and our ₤ 500 that we put aside to pay the room along with € 800 was gone from our locked suitcase since the room had not a safety deposit. We felt very lucky that we found our tickets and passports that were in the same place with the money.
        You can imagine how upset we were especially when I called the reception and the “lady” there told me not to shout because she was going to hung up to me. After a while, the manager came up and guess what? Instead of knocking the door he tried to get in with his key!! I asked him to see what happened and try to find a solution and he told us calmly… “It is your problem solve it”. And not only that; he and the reception stuff were so rude that made me and my friends question the honesty and integrity of them.
        When the police came assured us that nobody can get in the room from the outside using the window but only from the door and also that there was no evidence of forced entry. Everything was showing that the person who did it was in a hurry, because he hung only the one towel in the bathroom and the other was forgotten on the bed. Imagine!!!!!!!!!!!!
        The best part of the whole story is that when we said that we want to leave immediately the manager told us that we were going to pay for three nights despite the fact that we have stayed two nights. Eventually we paid for two nights 140 pounds.....So, ladies and gentlemen keep away from this hotel. STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE. I hope to find this website BEFORE you book, unlike me!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please if anyone has some information and such stories please don’t hesitate to contact me.

          When I saw the price I could get a double room in the Adelphi on the web, I was amazed. I thought it must be some off-peak, midweek price but I was staying in Liverpool for a night so I though I'd give it a go. Unfortunately I was flying into Liverpool relatively early in the morning and had to wait for 2:30pm check in but once we got to check in at 3pm I was relieved that I'd soon be getting rid of my bags and a short rest. Going up to the room I realized I was wrong as the cleaner stopped us from entering since it had not yet been cleaned! We eventually managed to get her to let us in to leave our bags, seeing the room covered in Pizza boxes and other guests' mess wasn't the best first impression but I'll get back to the room later. We left the room and decided to wait it out in the lounge. This room is fantastic, it is huge, with a high glass ceiling and impressive chandaleirs. I imagined how busy this room would have been in the grand old days of the Adelphi, but was soon to continue to discover why it was not so full at this point. Upon ascending the stairs back to the room I noticed the huge amount of dust and dirt on the white stairs. This was not a week's build up but these had not been cleaned in months, not to be expected for a hotel of the Adelphi's reputation. Back to the room, still not cleaned! Went down to the bar this time to have a drink to calm my nerves, it was quiet, a traditional bar with an older, dingey look. Not much to write about Back upstairs, the room still was not cleaned. It was about 5pm by the tiem the room was ready to occupy. By this time I was dying to get some rest but I wasn't so keen when I lifted back the sheets to see the bed was covered in hair, it didn't seem human hair, maybe it was more a fluff than hair, but there was plenty of it and this was nothing less than disgusting. I found myself wondering if the bed linen
          had not been changed at all or how else the maid had managed this, I decided that, in the interests of getting some rest, this was best out of mind. When I woke I now checked out the room, it had basic facilities, was decorated in an old fashioned manner but served the purpose of sleeping. The window unfortunately pointed inwards and being on the first floor, this meant I could see the roof of the lounge right outside the window. I guess it's pot luck as to whether you face in or out. The bathroom was unheated, had no shower and was a little less than clean, not dirty but not pristine either, the suite in the bathroom was also, like much of the furniture, not particularly modern. The hotel is old but this is no excuse for having furniture which is not new with a 50 year old look but 15 years old with a 1980s look, very disappointing. The final disappointment came when I returned from dinner later to find the night staff on the door nothing short of rude. They were unhappy at letting us return to the hotel and they had difficulty understanding the concept of paying attention to us when we asked for our key, preferring to continue chatting in spite of our continued requests. Upon leaving the next morning I was throroughly disappointed with the hotel, it's staff and the upkeep of the hotel. I was maybe a little reassured by the member of staff I saw now siping down the stairs, but when I realized that the lack of care had caused the stairs to have a permanent look of grime, this faded. All in all the Adelphi needs refurbishment, new furniture, a thorough cleaning and a sense of urgency travellers expect from top hotels. The Adelphi looks impressive from outside and has a name many would recognise, it lives up to neither of these.

            Everyone in Liverpool knows the Adelphi Hotel-the most famous hotel in the city and a landmark ever since the great days of Liverpool as a great port. It is now owned by Brittania Hotels and could be classified as a luxury hotel although equally you could argue it has seen better days. It has over 120 well appointed rooms with all the creature comforts and they are very spacious. There is also a good restaurant/coffee house, a hairdresser's and a disco,the latter is very popular with well heeled Liverpudlian's. I have eaten three times at the Adelphi and feel the food is both of a high quality and very reasonably priced. The service is friendly and efficient. There is a stunningly attractive lounge. It is huge and very well furnished. It was the place all the shipping tycoons of yesteryear would meet and sip afternoon tea. Bill Bryson visited Liverpool and stayed in the Grand Old Aldelphi and it was reputed to be Harold Wilson's favourite hotel. Certainly it has great charm and seems somehow to be very much part of Liverpool's fabric. Long may it remain so.

              One Friday last February I was in a minibus with 5 fellow Manchester students (4 nice and normal, one rather odd 35 year old, but let's not go there). We were off to spend the weekend at the student volunteers uk annual conference which was being held at Liverpool's Adelphi hotel. First the boring facts : the hotel is about 2 mins walk from Liverpool Lime Street. I wasn't driving (I was in the back eating chocolate and gossiping and totally not paying attention) but I know we got slightly lost when we left the motorway. Still, get yourself an A-Z and you'll be fine. Ancient in fact. The rooms didn't seem to realise that we were living in the 21st century. They were kinda musty, they creaked and you could never be certain something wasn't going to crawl out from the dust under the beds. Some of the paintwork was chipped and peeling and though the bathrooms were clean, they were not sparkling. The rooms were too hot and the bathrooms too cold which was an interesting combination..... This is not the kind of hotel where you would want to walk around bare foot, even for a second. Most of our meals were provided in a buffet style, but since one of my friends and I don't eat normal food, we skipped a few of the formal meals and went for Pizza. The first night we headed for Pizza Hut, but the second we though we'd try the hotel Pizzeria. Oh how I wish we hadn't. To get to the Pizzeria you can either go through the bar (tiny and full of old men - aarrrgggghhhh) or through the gym - nice! The service was pretty slow. No, I take that back. It was incredibly slow considering there were only 5 customers. The food was ok, but nothing to write home about (and certainly not on the one free postcard
              we got in the room that 3 of us were sharing....). We also went to the gym which was pretty nice. Locals can join as well as hotel guests, so it was pretty busy. The pool was tiny, but then aren't most hotel pools? The staff were pleasant enough but again, nothing special (and they looked at you in such a way you could tell they were thinking "scruffy students". Well pardon us if we didn't wear our ball gowns at all times. Any redeeming factors about the hotel? Let me think..... Well it was nice and central - tons of bars and restaurants within 10 mins walk, and the pedestrianized shopping streets were just across the road. Will I go again? Probably, to next years conference. Will I choose to go there when I'm paying for it with my own money? Not likely.

                The Adelphi is a well known hotel in the middle of Liverpool city centre. It has had it`s own TV series showing what happens behind the scenes and is still as popular as ever. It isn`t the cheapest hotel in the city, but it is certainly reasonably priced. I paid £60 for a double room with an en-suite bathroom and a fairly nice view of the city. This price included having breakfast for both me and my girlfriend delivered to the room, which certainly strikes me as reasonable. The room itself was very nice. TV, hair drier etc all provided, and the bathroom was something else - Absolutely sumptious and worth the money in itself. I didn`t have a meal there for the simple reason that it is right in the city centre, and my girlfriend and I wanted to try a restaurant just a few minutes walk away. From what I ahev been told by other friends who did eat there the food is quite acceptable. Reasonably priced and certainly worth the asking price.

                  I thought the Adelphi was a luxury hotel, so I took my girlfriend there for a romantic weekend break. I have never been more wrong in my life. We waited for 30 mins to check-in as there was only one person on the desk (at 8 o'clock on a friday night). As we went up to the room, the carpet was ratty and there were cigarette butts on the floor, which we thought was odd. In the room we were stunned and I didn't know whether to laugh or get annoyed. The bed-spread was singed and dirty, the radiator (that looked like it had been salvaged from the Ark) was rusty and had sharp edges and the television was propped up at one corner with a folded piece of paper! That is not to mention the peeling wallpaper and threadbare carpet. Obviously disgusted, I marched down to reception and asked for the Duty Manager. A snotty woman told us he was busy, so I explained to her my problem. She seemed unsuprised and said I could have another room or my money back. I said I wanted an apology because it had ruined our night-out. She said she couldn't apologise, so I demanded the Duty Manager. When he came out of his office he as good as said he didn't believe me and said he wanted to see it for himself. We went to the room and I pointed out what I thought shouldn't be wrong with a £25 a night B&B, never mind a £90 a night hotel. He agreed and then started to tell me about his budget restraints (like I cared). He did apologise (eventually), but again, I had to press the issue. When I got back to the car-park (a lock-up type thing), the car-park attendant tried to charge me £5 to release the car. I didn't hit him, but it was a close thing, especially when he grabbed my arm and told me to shusshhh! I raved at him a bit and then I complained, again, at reception. When they told him to waive the charge, I thought he was going to cry. All in all, not a great experience. It's such a shame that such a ma
                  gnificent building (and it is from the outside), with such a long and colourful history, has been allowed to deteriorate to the disgrace I encountered. I wouldn't ever stay at the Adelphi or any other hotel in the same chain again.
