When looking for a Bed and Breakfast to stay in near Edinburgh last year, my girlfriend and I did the usual trawl through the internet. One establishment caught our eyes straight away; Adniston Manor.

There were two reasons for this. Firstly, the extremely professional website and secondly, the picture of the manor on the front page (it was clear that 'manor' wasn't an inaccurate description).

Exploring the website, we found that it contained a huge amount of information about the manor and staying there. Each of the rooms has its own webpage with four high resolution photographs. There is even a video showing the owners introducing their house.

Having seen the outside, the breakfast room, and all of the bedrooms, we knew this was the place for us. We chose to stay three nights in the Woodland Room.

Despite having the postcode, finding the manor proved slightly difficult. Our sat nav took us down a country lane then intoned 'you have reached your destination' in the middle of it. We realised that, despite the lack of signs, we needed to carry on to the end of the lane, past a farmhouse, and then turn right.

We reached the driveway and realised that the website painted an accurate picture of Adniston Manor; it was impressive! We drove up the tree-lined drive, with the gravel crunching beneath the wheels and immediately felt like lord and lady of the manor!

We were welcomed by the owners who showed us to our room. Our next pleasant surprise was that this was in a separate block to the manor house, in an adjoining cottage, with the drive outside, and our own private entrance; very nice! The room had a veranda, with a seating area overlooking the woodland area of the garden.

The huge patio windows looked out over the woodland area too, and gave the room a light and airy feel. The room was decorated to a very high standard and the quality of the furnishings extremely high, too.

The bathroom was huge! There was a shower and a large wet floor area (so catering for the disabled) with plenty of room to move around. Again, the décor was of a high standard and spotlessly clean.

After a lovely night's sleep, we went to the breakfast room for our morning meal. I'm not much of a breakfast person, but a look at the menu soon changed my mind. A huge selection of mouth watering breakfasts were available including a traditional Scottish breakfast with haggis.

Whilst waiting to order, we helped ourselves to fresh fruit juice and admired the huge range of clocks on display of many different types. During periods of silence, the room resounded with the ticking and clicking of the many timepieces; a somewhat evocative sound that fitted well with our impression of the Manor.

My girlfriend opted for the porridge with fresh berries, cream and honey and declared it to be the best porridge she'd ever tasted.

We both then had the full English breakfast with lots of tea. This came on a huge plate and was cooked to perfection and extremely filling.

Over the next two mornings, we tried other options for our morning meal. All were beautifully cooked, filling, and well presented.

We started each day on a full stomach, ready to explore the East Lothian area of Scotland.

All too soon, we had to leave Adniston Manor, but both of us felt that we'd chosen a really lovely place to stay. The tariffs were not cheap; our room was £40 per person per night, but the quality of the service and accommodation made us feel we were getting good value for money.

Adniston Manor is clearly a superior Bed and Breakfast establishment and I can recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in the area.
