My wife and I had a marvelous stay at the Amerdale House Hotel from March 30 to April 3, 2004. Arncliffe in the Littondale valley is as picturesque a English village as we have ever seen. It is a wonderful base for day walks, whether along the valley floor, where the countryside is lovely, or up over the moors, where the scenery is spectacular. Lambing season was in progress and we delighted in watching the baby lambs cavort in the pastures.

The Amerdale House itself is a beautiful old manor house, very nicely decorated and maintained. Our four poster room on the second floor was spacious, quiet, and most comfortable. The staff at the Amerdale were very welcoming and informative, and the owners, Nigel and Paula, were wonderful hosts. The common rooms (library, bar, formal sitting room and dining room) were quite nicely appointed and supplied daily with flowers by Paula. I enjoyed reading some of the local history in the library, the single malt collection in the bar, and tea and the daily paper in the sitting room. But best of all is the dining room, where Nigel (who is a master chef) regaled us for four consecutive nights with some of the most wonderful dinners that we can recall. The food was both delectable and imaginative, created from scratch each day by Nigel - ever had licorice ice cream (a unique taste treat) with a delectable raspberry tart? We just can?t say enough about the cuisine. It is superb and you will not be disappointed. And the breakfasts are also terrific, typically lasting us through hiking to dinner.

We are recommending the Amerdale House to all our friends and hope to return there ourselves some day. We have stayed in many nice places on multiple trips to England and put the Amerdale House Hotel at the top of the list.
