Ballillinny Holiday Cottages
Advantages: Lovely cottage
Disadvantages: Water not very hot
We were recently in Belfast because I wanted to visit The Giant's Causeway. I spotted these cottages on an internet site and decided they were just what we were looking for; close to the major sites we wanted to visit and not too far to travel from Belfast.
It took us about an hour to get to the cottages from Belfast so not too long a drive. The cottages are situated on the main road and about half a mile from The Giant's Causeway; we could see the visitors centre from the bedroom window. With the satnav set we found the cottages really easily- they are well signposted and set off the road with a short road leading to the group of 11 cottages.
GETTING INTO THE COTTAGE...
We had been e mailed asking us to meet the owner of the cottages at The Office which is one of the cottages on site. When we got there the office was closed but a quick phone call had us assured that the door to the cottage was open, the heating on, and the keys in the microwave! So in we went and everything was as we had been told; the gentleman came round later to show us how to use the fire, set the heating and because it was a cold night, he even went to get us a couple of additional electric heaters.
The cottage was much bigger than we had anticipated. Even when we first got inside and into the entrance hall I could see it was going to be big, as the entrance area was very large with clean scrubbed wooden floors and whitewashed walls; this wooden and whitewashed theme is continued throughout the house.
Downstairs the large living area incorporates living room and kitchen. The lounge are has a leather three seater sofa with one of the chairs having the kind of mechanism whereby the back can be pushed down and a footrest comes out- very comfortable. There is also a two seater sofa as well as a round wooden table and six chairs. On the small side table is information about the cottage and a selection of booklets about the area. The gas fire is quite tricky to light at first but that was because we hadn't realised we had to flick the gas switch on the wall to release the gas supply; once we knew this then it was easy, and given that the weather was pretty bleak the basket style fire made a very pleasant and welcoming centre piece for the room. The ceiling is high and makes the room double room height but it doesn't feel too big because of the dark wooden beams, and actually feels very warm and cosy. The kitchen consists of a series of units and also has a washing machine/dryer, microwave and a fridge freezer. The cupboards are well stocked with cutlery crockery pots and pans and a large walk in cupboard boasts a hoover, iron and ironing board etc
There are 3 bedrooms, one double downstairs and two twin bedrooms upstairs. They are decorated in a similar way, all having lovely thick duvets covered with green covers, white bed linen and with bedside tables and a dressing table and chair. I did like the fact that all of the bedrooms have bedside lamps because I dislike having to turn off the light and then getting to bed in the dark.
There is a bathroom upstairs with the usual facilities and downstairs a wash room which I assume is for any guests with disabilities. Beware though, this room is very cold! The bathrooms come complete with plenty of toilet roll, handwash and there are well worn but clean towels in a range of sizes.
Throughout the cottage there are plenty of cupboards so if a family was here for a longer length of time there is lots of space to store stuff.

The cottage is ideally placed to visit The Giant's Causeway and the scenery around the cottage is fantastic. There is plenty of space to park a car and although there are 11 cottages in total I didn't feel we were always "on top" of each other.
The cottage is very roomy and comfortable with all the facilities I would expect and for the cost of £120 for 2 nights, it was good value. Check out is usually 11am, but for no extra charge guests can leave up to 12.30pm. there are a few requests when guests leave, which are common sense, such as putting out the rubbish in the bins next to the house and not leaving the cottage filthy dirty. However, it was all very easy going.
The one complaint I would have is that the hot water is lukewarm and even though we were turning on the water, it never got hot. Because the cottage is so big and has wooden floors, and because it was cold weather, lots of heating is required to keep warm.
In conclusion, though, this was a great cottage and we had a fantastic, and cosy 2 nights here.
