Advantages: Very economical, close to town, nice views of the cathedral with all amenities.
Disadvantages: The room service was late and the reception was on the first floor.
The second Best Western Hotel I have ever stayed in was in Preston England (after thoroughly enjoying my honeymoon in the one in Portugal).
After a long drive getting there in the very hot weather, I was irritable and desperate to get into a bath. I panicked when I parked up in the multistory across the road to discover that I didn't have enough change for the 24 hour parking! I decided to put the minimum and ask at reception where the nearest cash machine was. To my total delight, I got to reception and the lovely lady on shift, sensing my exasperation, sent one of their staff to put a ticket in my car window charging the parking to the room with the keys returned to me in my room 10 minutes later! I was overjoyed!
I got in my room which was small but pleasant. The only irritating thing about the room was that the windows didn't open fully (for our own safety) and I was boiling but after asking the member of staff who had returned my car keys, he showed me a way of opening it fully (although he said this was 'off the record')!
I then settled down to have a bath and I was so pleased with all the luxury extras such as Dove soap, shampoo, Lux shower gel and a small bubble bath! I must linger on the subject of this bathroom because it was so good it made me want to spend my entire income and live in this place! It was much better than my bath and shower I have at home! I had a bath and a shower and honestly felt so refreshed and clean it was amazing!
The room had all the customary extras like tv and hairdryer with trouser press and hangers etc. But this tv had a special feature to choose a movie and charge it to your room for less than it costs to go to the cinema! I was thrilled as I hadn't yet had a chance to see the new Will Smith movie and I couldn't think of a better way to enjoy an evening in a hotel other than with a nice meal and Will Smith!
I called to the hotel restaurant and ordered dinner (at no extra cost) as room service and put the movie on. The only thing that I can complain about was that by the time the film had finished (10.45 pm) the food had not arrived and somewhat angered I called back down to the hotel restaurant and explained the situation. In order to resolve the situation and my annoyance, they offered to give me any meal from the menu along with a bottle of wine and it would be completely complementary! I was pleased at the outcome and was even more impressed (although perplexed) that it came within half an hour with a sincere apology from the lady who brought it up to me.
The room had wooden shutters instead of curtains and I must say that this ensured that I slept like a baby the whole night through and was completely refreshed for the delicious (and immense) complementary breakfast! The vegetarian options were brilliant with more than 5 options to choose from including cooked or continental!
I must say that the staff at this hotel also excelled in their customer service skills and customer focused attitudes and I would recommend them whole heartedly. My second visit to a Best Western and I must say that I am becoming a big fan!
Summary: All the charm of the north, recommended!
