Advantages: None

Disadvantages: Past it's best - room small, dark, noisy with tiny beds

My mum, sister and her daughter booked into this hotel to visit Axbridge nearby where Mum had her honeymoon some 54 years ago. At the time of booking we had asked if there were twin rooms on the ground floor so Mum wouldn't have to negotiate stairs and was told there were. We duly booked 2 twin rooms. What a disappointment. I shared with my 82 year old Mum in a tiny room with 2 two foot six beds squashed together. No space to walk around. No seat in front of a small mirror - couldn't open the drawers (not enough room). Bathroom was as big as the bedroom but what's the good of that!!! We didn't sleep. My sister and her daughter's room was twice the size. Wanted same price as other rooms - £80! Outrageous. Room should be taken out of commission or sold as childs room! It was also under the main stairs so all night the clomping of guests!

We did complain but were told that we had been put there because there was a wedding party and the hotel was full. When we said we should have been told at the time of booking the receptionist saidd that we should have complained straight away and they would have moved us. We pointed out that we had been told that they were full with a wedding and she said they had had a (rather sudden in my opinion) cancellation. All in all she made it very difficult for us to complain and saw no problem with charging for a broom cupboard. She justified the small room by saying we had asked for a ground floor room (which we had) and we said that had we been told the dimensions and bed sizes we would not have expected our 82 year old mum to stay there and wouldn't have booked!

In the end the manager was called. He did at least listen to our complaint and provided us with a reduction (we paid £50 instead of £80). To be honest the damage was already done!

Breakfast was a buffet style with a choice of toast, sticky buns, full english (eggs kept running out and it took a while for the staff to replenish) or cereal. You had to make your own toast and there was a bit of a queue. There were also coissants which also ran out. I asked a waitress for some but she never returned with any!

I got the overall impression of a once very smart hotel now rather threadbare. Carpets were holey and paint in bathroom peeling. Not nearly enough staff. No room service. No bag service.

My advice - avoid it - for £80 you can do a lot better!

Summary: A night to remember - for all the wrong reasons
